Use Disk Utilities on your system installation disk and format the drive before trying to install a system.

UPDATE - Problem Solved

The new SATA drives need to be jumpered. I placed a jumper on pins 5 - 6, setting it to 1.5 GB. The drive came right up

Actually I'm having the same problem right now. I'm trying to format a 1 TB Western Digital Caviar Black. I've tried it in a 20" 2.0 G5 iMac and a PowerMac dual 2.0 and the 10.4 system disk is not seeing it in Disk Utilities, this is the second HD in two days, I returned the first as DOA. Will try 10.5 next. Any ideas?

+ Apple EFI doesn't like SATA 3GBs drives. I am perplexed by this. More so, after I learned it is due to driver extensions.

If Disk Utilities doesn't see your new HDD check the wiring. If still out of luck try the disk externally or in a different Mac and try to format it there. Remember, on a PowerPC based machine you'll need to format it with the Apple Partition Table as opposite to the GUID table on Intel based machines.
