DIY starter repair for 1996 Infiniti Q45

Been a while since i asked about a repair manuals on the Infiniti 96 q45, and it’s still the same. All i need are some removal and install instructions for replacement of the starter in my 96 infiniti Q45. Can’t find any instructions with step by step on how to remove it. And maybe a few pictures would help show the guys around here that it’s probably not as hard as it seems. So iv’e spent well over $60 on manuals that looked like the information was there, only to find out it wasn’t. So is there anybody out there that might have a manual that has how to remove the starter, that would be willing to email me that section only. You don’t know how much that would help, since iv’e had the new starter in the trunk for about 8 months. Thank you

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

It surprises me that you have manuals that lack directions for starter removal/installation. Perhaps it is buried in a section you wouldn’t think? Maybe check the index to see if it is listed there. Or can you explain what they did have and what you need that is missing?

I don’t have a direct answer for your specific vehicle as I have not worked on one myself. However, I wanted to ask if you have registered for and checked on the AutoZone website? I believe you can sign up completely for free and it will give you access to lots of free repair guides and manuals in one place that are difficult to find elsewhere. I believe the guides went back as far as vehicles from 1996 and included much more than I could find anywhere else, for instance detailed wiring diagrams.

I hope this helps. I do apologize if they do not have a guide for your vehicle.

Thanks for answering my question. No it's not buried, it shows only one small picture and about 2 paragraph that really doesn't say anything helpful. If i take it to a shop they drop the motor at around $500 to $700 cost. One fixya guy talked to my friend and told him how to slide it along the frame to remove it. I think everyone's chicken to touch it myself. think they might do something wrong. Thank you for your help. Let you know how it god.

@lynnwood53 That is what I feared. On the Japanese line of brands and vehicles, they find a way to tuck everything away in the engine bay neatly with little to no clearance for changing parts without pulling the engine. This is most likely the reason why there is not a detailed removal/install guide in the service manuals although I see no reason why they should leave this detail out.

Pulling or lifting the engine can be dangerous and cost more money as parts/hoses/seals/wiring and connectors can break during this process and even more so with age. I wouldn't hesitate to do this for you at a much lesser cost.

Unfortunately, it will have to be done by a mechanic unless you know someone who has the tools/knowledge to do it. If the engine is pulled, the best thing you can do is have the engine and any failing/worn components serviced while it is out of the vehicle.

This is lynn, the one with the 96 infiniti Q45 4.5 L, v8. Just wanted to let you know that a few days ago i checked out the auto zone online tech help. They had several infiniti repair guides, I asked for starter removal & install, and it said " No results for my car" and if there was any information, it didn't cover much then it would go off onto the 97's, 2003, etc. But i did want to thank you for your help. And i decided to call someone and just have them do it. So there's a mobile tech coming over today, and the price is great. So wish me luck. Going to replace a LCD on my 21.5" Imac later today. Took forever to find the right one. Oldturkey03 helped me with the right model LCD screen. But if everthing goes right my car will be done today. Thanks again.

@lynnwood53 this is one of those tasks that is an extreme PITA. It requires the removal of the Rack and pinion and lifting the engine of the motor mounts just enough to get it removed. Apparently not even the FSM mentions this and I spoke to the mechanic at my garage. This maybe one of those cases where it is better to let somebody else do it....

Take a look on here and check the posting by “JedCoop” and see if that will help you out.

Yep it's my kind of luck, never easy. If i could afford it i would have the shop do it for me. Most of them want between $500 to $750 to do it. It's loose and ready to come out but the cone part of the starter is about a half inch to long. Someone also suggested after it's loose and ready to come out he said he jacked up his q45 another two inches, on the passenger side suspension. And that gave him enough room to get it out the rest of the way. And then put it back in, in the reverse order. Think it will work? A friend and I are supposed to take a look this weekend. And there was another guy that got his out from behind the passenger side front tire, by taking off the piece of shroud behind the tire and that gave him enough room to remove it. Anyway i'll let you guys know if it works or not. And thanks everyone for your help.

Some extensions on your socket set and you may need to loosen the steering rack but I do not believe that the motor needs to be moved. Disconnect your negative battery cable so you don’t short out the starter wires.
