MacBook doesn't start on AC

Hi there,

my 2Ghz C2D Macbook doesn't start anymore. What happend is that my charger imploded during the charging process of the Macbook.

What I tried:

AC Yes / Battery No / Macbook => No :-(

AC No / Battery Yes / Macbook => Yes :-) / Charging => No :-(

AC Yes / Battery Yes / Macbook => Yes :-) / Charging => No :-(

What could be the problem? Logicboard? Megasafe Board? another connection?

UPDATE(!): Changed the Magsafe Board. Now it does work connected to AC or to a charged battery. But still not charging. So. I either use it on AC or on battery. But can't get the battery charged. Suggestions?

Did you replace the MagSafe adapter. Please explain this implosion

Didn't do anything till now. Should I try changing the adapter first?

Implosion:

My original Apple charger was broke and I bought several months ago another one on amazon for 29 EUR (non-apple). It worked well until 2 days ago. I plugged it in but the light didn't went amber. So I looked more carefully and recodnised that the charger looked weired (One black cable was looking out). I played with it (still plugged into AC and Macbook) and it just imploded (*bzzz* - *boom*). After calming down I went back to the macbook (I did jump to the other site of the room, after the *boom*) and checked if it started. But my battery was empty so I couldn't test it. Until today. I went to the apple service and tested it there.

I can't tell if you're talking about the MagSafe adapter or your MacBook. What was the result of your visit to Apple? Did they test the adapter? Did they test the Book?

による

First they connected the macbook with a charging cable and removed the battery. Macbook didn't start and no light indication. After that a fully charged battery was inserted and the Macbook unplugged from the charging cable. Macbook started as usual. Works. But OSX says Battery at 0%. Charging cable plugged in and no light indication. Macbook still runs on battery.

It sounds like you fried the MagSafe board. Here's how to replace it: MacBook Core 2 Duo Magsafe Board Replacement

You might also want to replace the AC adapter with an original Apple product as the knock offs are not to good sometimes.

Here's the part: MacBook MagSafe DC-In Board

OK. Thanks. The Guy at Apple told the same thing. He said: "It might be the Megasafe Board with 90% chance. If not, it is the Logicboard."

So. I found this piece on eBay for about 10$, but I wanted to support you guys. So I bought it from ifixit. You deserve it. But I have to wait for the delivery :-( Since I'm in the good old Germany, it takes time... :-(

The Apple guy said they had some of them on stock but don't sell pieces. He wanted 150 EUR (including everything) for it. Too much for a student.

$150 Euros for a MagSafe board? Did he have a gun in his hand? This guy is a thief. By the way, most of that answer questions do not work for iFixit. We just do this to try to help people. You can click on our icons to see who and where we are ;-) If you need someone close to home, one of our best and respected contributors is remacberlin: http://www.ifixit.com/User/228455/remacb...

Check him out!

Yes. 150 EUR. He said this includes the Megasafe Board itself and the assembly. They are always this expensive if you don't have guarantee anymore.

による

This is more than double what I do the same repair for. I'm sure Apple does not know how much this guy is charging. Again contact remacberlin to help you find a good repair place, or just ask him how much he charged for this repair.

による

Don't know if Apple is aware of this. But next time I will check this site first :-)

My part is dispatched and arrives in 2-3 weeks. I will report if "I fixed it" or not.

Thanks guys.

Look to see if any of the pins on the magsafe connector are bent, and try a new power plug (an apple one not a 3rd party!) before going in and replacing the board.

Let's see if I've got this correct> You want him to try to repair the pins on the adapter that blew up?

による

Sorry Mayer, I meant the magsafe plug on the mac, I was under the impression the charger had exploded, not the board. I prefer trying the easy fixes before opening the machine- and not using 3rd party products for important things like power.

による

Dust - thanks for the response. What pins on the MagSafe board? My thought is that the bad adapter fried the magSafe board. There are male pins on the adapter and basically receptacles on the board. Can you clarify?

による

I checked. The megasafe connection pins at the macbook are okay. And believe me, I will no more buy any 3rd party products for my Apple stuff. Even if they are overpriced. Think I had luck it didn't burn my logicboard.

Thanks for the response.
