How to replace rubber gasket that surrounds the screen?

I had recently swapped the top assembly to get a lcd w/o dead or stuck pixels. The rubber lid that surrounds the screen is in fair condition but I would like to replace it but I haven’t found a guide. Can somebody tell me how I can replace it w/o taking off the screen from the casing?

I thought I found the solution but it was for a unibody MBP. So I removed the link but I did find a solution on my own. Just to let you all know, this is no means a proper fix.

  1. Dissassemble top assembly from frame.
  2. “Scrape" off the rubber gasket.
  3. Get your new rubber gasket and cut off the part that is suppose to lay under the screen.
  4. Test fit the new rubber gasket.
  5. Use double sided adhesive to attach the bottom part of the gasket onto the assembly.
  6. Use a bit of super glue then work your way around the sides and top.
  7. Reassemble.

I don't even recommend to do this at all to anybody. But I did it because my rubber gasket was damaged and was starting to fall apart. I don't know how long it will last. Could work for a while or it could fall out soon.

@prestmig - @tomchai is correct here!

The retina systems are very different than the older Unibodies. All you'll do is end of damaging the display. It also needs a different sized rubber gasket.

See if you can pull it out and squeeze a new one in without moving the glass

If it involves pulling the glass off, DONT DO IT, it is not possible to remove the glass without destroying the LCD.

I will buy another rubber gasket off eBay and try that. It seems difficult but looking at how the gasket sits in between the glass the casing I think I can do it with enough patience. And with removing the glass, I don't intend to do that but it is possible to separate it from the casing with the lcd still attached. It's just a difficult job to do.

Edit: If I can't do it, I may let a third party repair shop do it depending on how much they charge.

I have never seen anyone successfully pull off a Retina Mac display glass without ruining the LCD. Are you sure?

Its too difficult to remove the rubber gasket in one piece. It is possible to nearly "scrape" it all out but not possible to squeeze a new gasket in between the housing and the glass. I did find a solution myself. Look above.

bought the screen gasket on ebay. I have a part of the screen where the gasket where gone. I'm planning just to put some rubber on that side. hopefully it will work. I just need a band aid solution for now and I've already replaced my screen which is costly. I won't be buying a new screen just for the rubber. Hopefully it will work.

Has anyone found a way to do this? Here is a video of someone replacing the rubber gasket without removing the LCD panel, but I would like additional information/instructions if someone has successfully completed this process.

I have seen this Youtube tutorial. It was a bit poor camera angles at times but still very useful. I have the same issue with mine where the bezel is perishing and would like to change it over. The person in the video used a multimeter probe to scrape out the old one. But I think if you used a plasctic tool instead (like a spudger) you will be less likely to damage the glass. But yes, very fiddly to put the new on in. I will let you know how I go.

the risk of damaging the proretina glass is very great — given that all mac centres are currently closed, can i just use sticky tape around the border of the glass screen to stop any more of the rubber gasket falling off?
