Brother spilled Goo Gone on his Nintendo 3DS. What should he do?

So, I gave my brother my old 3DS because he would’ve gotten more enjoyment out of it. It only had minor problems, and he was able to fix them. I put stickers on the back, so I told him he should use Goo-Gone to get rid of them. Without thinking, he grabs the bottle and pours some on the 3DS. It was closed, and turned off.

We immediately grab paper towels and rags and clean up what we can. Now, when he turns it on, there are noticeable splotches in the top and bottom screens, and I don’t know if there is any internal damage. He is currently in the bathroom, blowing it with a blow-dryer.

Is this the right course of action, and if not, what should we do?

Any help is appreciated.

Just be glad it wasn’t Goof Off. You would have melted the plastics AND lost the affecttdd screens. That stuff works as a paint stripper if you need a reference point on how strong it is.

The Goo Gone shouldn’t harm the DS, but you need to take it apart and soak the boards in isopropyl alcohol to displace the Goo Gone before you replace any of the parts that may have been damaged. Use the guides on the device page to do this.

The screens are generally not salvageable in situations like this, since they generally end up having liquid in the layers that permanently staining it. This won’t affect the lifespan of the screen, but until you replace them you’re stuck with the marks behind the actual LCD’s. If it’s under the glass that can be fixed, but most of these spills usually result in liquids seeping into the display and ruining it.
