My headphone jack is suddenly not working

Recently, I pulled my headphones out of the jack, it was a bit violent, I went to do something for about 5 minutes and when I came back it suddenly didn’t connect properly, the computer would recognize it but it would disconnect right after, ive tried to update the drivers but none of that works

Hi @andrewifix

The headphone socket may be loose on the pcb or it may even be damaged. If it is damaged then it will have to be replaced as it cannot be repaired.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Acer Nitro 5 AN515-53-55G9 Speaker Replacement guide.

It is useful as it shows how to open the laptop so access the the headphone socket is possible. Fortunately the socket is mounted on a separate pcb and not on the motherboard.

Here’s a link to just one supplier of the replacement part. It is shown only to give an idea of the cost of the part and what it looks like. There may be other suppliers online that might suit you better. Just search for Acer Nitro 5 AN515-53-55G9 USB audio board to get results.

If you wish to only replace the socket itself you may have to see if it has any identifying marks on it and then search on places such as here - select phone connectors 3.5mm 1/8 in jack (female) and see if they have the exact part. Good luck with that though ;-)

There are 2 things you can do:

System hardware drivers may be missing or corrupt, this could be caused by repair, reinstallation, system malfunction or malware. try using a driver repair program to repair/update the drivers for your headphone jack

The headphone jack is dead, this will require you to replace the jack, this is difficult because you need to do some soldering to replace it. i’d recommend taking your laptop to a repair shop to have a look at it.

If your laptop is still under warranty, then backup your data and send it along with your proof of purchase to where you got it and tell them what’s wrong

Hope this helps!!!

1.You can also check the miniplug on your headphone. It could have been damaged when you pulled your headphone. The input plug commonly have rings that could bend and ths affect the connection or sound quality. You can DIY replace the input plug or buy a new headphone instead.

2.Try to use other headphone if it will work, to check if the problem is on your headphone input plug, or the headphone jack.

Cheers.
