Phone gets water damage at 5cm

So just trying to test my phones water resistance got me into a whole lot of trouble when my Face ID stopped working 5 min after then after restarting the phone a green line then the screen going fully dead. I then go to the apple store and they tell me I have water damage and the logic board is broken. And they will charge be $800 for a new one. This is the second phone they have neglected to fix after an issue. My 7’s audio ic chip was &&^&@@ and needed to be d-soldered then put back on. With many other people having this same problem and getting no help from apple they were forced to buy a new phone just like me. Well their false advertising has screwed up my phone and now I’m left with the option to sue as I am fed up and so many other people are too. Let me know how I should go about this process. I will be sueing for $3000 CAD and also want to make them release any defects their products have in the future with a defects website and them recalling every phone that has this problem. Let me know your opinion. I have seen a guy sue amazon and they ended up just paying him out so I think this is the only way of going

Same thing happened to my 256gb IPhone XS completely fried because something spilled on in inside my backpack. I don’t have any options and kinda confused and !#^&@@ on how it can happen. I think my iPhone was a defect and was possibly improperly sealed but now it looks like i can’t do anything

My bf had the same problem with his phone too. His XS Max slid into the sink while he was washing his hands and he took it out of the water ASAP but it died instantly and I tried the go-to-methods but everything has failed so far so I’m scouring the internet for other possible solutions. It isn’t as advertised at all so I totally get your frustration plus fixing the phone with Apple would cost $800 at least when the phone itself already cost $1000++

Also, even any bit of dampness makes his current iPhone X go wonky - the keyboard will not function properly and neither will face recognition and the phone will be unresponsive so yea to anyone reading, it really isn’t water resistant unless you count the moisture in the air

Just had the same issue, and now it hasn’t stop restarting every 50 secs. It’s a pain in the ass that they sell a water resistant product and in the end it doesn’t resists a splash.

I had the same issue with my Xs Max. It slipped into a cup of water and now it’s completely malfunctioning. First, it’s only on silent mood and refused to get on ringer. Secondly, it started going on and off on it’s own. I then decided to update the software, right after downloading the software and decided to install; as soon as I installed the update, the phone went off and is now refusing to come on. Apple really needed to fix this mess before putting it on the market. This is criminal in nature.

I understand man, I posted a similar situation, my XS 256gb was with some wet clothes for probs less than 30s because a water bottle had spilled inside my backpack while camping. The phone quit after 10 mins and the cameras fogged up. Apple says they can’t do anything and it’s because hey are hiding behind their no liquid damage warranty. My 6 took on more water in its life than my 3 month old iPhone

I certainly agree regarding the iPhone 7 Audio IC issue, Apple has consistently denied any design flaw on their part.

However, regarding you testing the water resistance, I disagree. Take a look at the specs for the iPhone XS Max (https://www.apple.com/ca/iphone-xs/specs...):

Splash-, Water- and Dust-Resistant3

Rated IP68 (maximum depth of 2 metres up to 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529

Notice the little “3” in superscript. Here is what the fine print says (emphasis mine):

  • iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are splash-, water- and dust-resistant, and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 2 metres up to 30 minutes). ''Splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. ''Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty.

Apple is doing it’s darnedest to wash it‘s hands of any issues. For one, only ‘controlled-laboratory conditions’ (hand picked devices, perfect conditions…), secondly, they’re already distancing themselves from how long water resistance will last and lastly, they won’t even cover water damage under warranty. It’s pretty obvious that Apple does not have a high level of faith in the water resistance for any individual device. Anyone who willingly tries to test if a phone is actually water resistant should be prepared for a complete loss of functionality.

That doesn’t mean you don’t have grounds for a lawsuit but you probably could have saved yourself a lot of trouble. An iPhone remains a “computer in your pocket”, it is immensely complex and it’s quite frankly, when you look at the level of technology, it’s borderline miraculous that we even have this level of technology accessible to us in the first place. There are lots of reasons to be unhappy with Apple…but they are pushing the bleeding edge of technology on every new iPhone iteration. I fix heavily damaged devices every day and at times I am shocked at what people willingly subject their phones and tablet to.

Anyway, this isn’t really about you in particular, hopefully this will also serve as a context for others when they wonder if their phone can really survive exposure to water. The answer is “probably not”.

I had these same issues and I did not come anywhere close to their parameters. No prolonged water exposure. Not in the shower. Maybe a poolside splash...maybe! I do live in a humid environment but come on. Facial recognition stopped working...green bolt...and be only had it 6 months (that is NOT normal wear and tear...I’m so careful with my phone!). I feel like they mislead in advertising and hide behind fine legal print.

Apple replaced my phone for free after 3 days of going back and fourth with them. First went to the store and they told me it was water damage and they couldn’t do anything without me paying $700. Next I called apple and educated them on my issue, spoke to them calmly and without disrespect. They understood my issue, I pointed out the Sep 2018 keynote where they spoke about the device being rated ip68. I also pointed out how the reps at the store deemed my phone water damaged but couldn’t prove to me that the water strips were triggered. (They weren’t triggered) I know for a fact the XS MAX is defective, I’m happy I got a new phone but it sucks I have to treat it like a first gen iPhone when it comes to being close to water.

Same situation, I had a 256gb XS and somehow got water thru the camera lining. I had a leaky water bottle in my backpack and the iPhone momentarily was a bit wet, I dried it and did all the procedures but now it’s not repairable and has the red line indicator. Idk what to do and I paid $1150. Confused on why my old 6 survived a good drop in a 6ft pool

Go check out the September 2018 keynote, FF to 40:30. That might help with your false advertising lawsuit. I pray it helps, I’m having the same issue with my xs max right now and it’s only seen wet hands after showering and some rain while I’m at work. My iPhone 5s saw ALOT more water than this XS MAX and never had any issues! Matter of fact, that old 5s is still alive and well and loved by my mother. No doubt in my mind this model is defective.

EXACTLY! I’m in the exact situation. I’m just so mad that they chose that ad campaign and my older phone saw more and worked. I want it back! And all my $$$$. I hate that they can hide behind this “limited warranty” no water damage. Where is my proof they didn’t send me a faulty phone since wet hands provided water damage.
