My wheel has stopped scrolling and appears to be off centre

My wheel is not scrolling, it does not roll freely, although turns when touched, but has to be pushed through. It also does not scroll the page even if I rotate it

Replace the scroll wheel. The legs connecting to the rotation sensor may be broken.

My wheel stopped free-spinning a while after I got it. Lately is has not been registering my spins reliably, often going in the opposite direction I am spinning it for a second before correcting itself.

I was just coming to iFixit to see if I could find a disassembly guide so I could get in there and clear what I assume is debris causing the issue.

As a stopgap measure, I've instead blown it out with canned air and swept on either side of the wheel with a keyboard brush. This has resulted in better scrolling performance, but did not resolve the issue where it no longer spins freely when clicked.

It sounds like something has either jammed inside next to the wheel, or the wheel had popped out of its centre mount on one side, that could explain the being off centre also.

You might be able to fix it.

You need to remove the four pads underneath to expose 4 screws,

remove the screws, then you can lift the top off the mouse, you’ll now be able to see what the problem is with the wheel.

If it has just popped out of one side you can probably pop it back in by pulling the mount on that side away from it and pushing the wheel back to let the centre piece click back in.

If there is dirt in the wheel then that may be harder to fix, as the wheel has several spokes which flicker past the sensor.. if the spokes are clogged or blocked (light isn’t able to pass through the gaps between) then there would be no response.. (same if mis aligned). You could try using a cotton bud with some alcohol to remove the dirt. Mine had some dust and fluff etc in the bottom of it..

To fix this I partially unmounted the wheel by pulling the centre mount away from the wheel and lifting the wheel.

There is a piece of metal that keeps the wheel in place, I didn’t touch that. Lifting it partially I was able to get in underneath where the dirt was and clean it with some isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud.

I then had a fully working mouse again.

Good Luck!

Thanks !

...but do you have a trick to remove the four pads to expose 4 screws ?

How did you place them back afterward ?

さんによる

@man0l0 Use a thin metal prying tool, like this one iSesamo Opening Tool(iSesami) and gently pry the pads off.

In order to place them back, it's easy to remove the remaining adhesive using some high concentration isopropyl alcohol, and then use some strong double sided mobile tape Tesa 61395 Tape(like the 2mm version here)

Thanks you for the tips and recommendation !

@man0l0 I've had two of these now, first time I just pulled the pads off and made a mess of it, on the second one I used a scalpel blade which didn't damage the pads, the glue tabs are not as firm though, you'd probably need to get new glue or tape as someone above mentioned.

One thing worth noting as I damaged my first one, do not damage the blades in any way, the slightest scrape or scratch on them can deform them enough that it will affect the response of the wheel. I did this by using a sharp knife to remove some dirt between two, it was barley noticeable by sight but enough to effect its functionality.
