XZ premium charges after putting pressure

So before my xz premium completely stopped charging my phone used to randomly stop charging and used to charge very slow. I used a quick charge 3.0 charger and certified usb c cable. I had to put the usb type c cable in a certain position to get my phone charging but after a while it completely stopped charging. I inspected the port it was in good shape no bent, nor broken cleaned the port but no luck. So, I started messing with the phone so I find a way to charge it when I put pressure on the bottom of the phone from front and back altogether where usb port and flex cable is connected it starts charging.

UPDATE:The on board connector for the charging port needs to be replaced or resoldered.

I suspect the board to board connector on the motherboard had a dry joint and by applying presure on the back and front of the phone, just above the charging port, presses the connect joint down onto the motherboard and it charges. Only problem with this is a) the dry joint will heat up especially if you try to fast charge the phone because of the amps being put through the circuit and b) the joint will become increasingly worse until even pressing down on the phone won’t get around the problem

For anyone else having the same problem, first change the charing port to rule out the USB connector and then if the same symptons persist, you probably need the BtB connector replacing or at least re-soldering, I personally would replace it so you have new charing port and a new BtB connector

Hi ...I have similar problem, not sure how to resolder or replace btb connector

さんによる

Hi does anybody have any pictures/guides how to replace the BTB connector? I am about to start this repair now but not sure how the motherboard looks with the old BTB removed and whether I have accidentally damaged the main motherboard by removing the old board to board connector. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi, is there more information available on this thread. Onboard connector of my phone is playing up for sure but don't exactly know the problem.

Hi. Good post. I have had exactly the same issue as described. Phone would only charge when pressure applied. Replaced USB port and flex cable and this did not fix the problem.

Looked at the board to board connector and it was indeed loose on the left hand side (nearer to speaker).

Phone stopped charging all together in end so removed the old board connector. Have ordered a replacement connector but i have two queries:

1) Does anybody have a guide/overview of BTB repairs for an XZ premium

2) Does anybody have a picture of a motherboard with no board connector fitted? I just want to make sure I have not damaged the main port or left any of the old connector on the main board prior to fitting the new BTB.

Thanks

Oh wow, just reading all this now, and wished this one had come up in my searches for answers for my phone previous to me taking to phone technician!

I had exactly the same experience as Zayn. The technician replaced the charging port, he had problems getting the phone apart and broke the screen ( had to wait again for parts as live in a regional area ) he paid for screen but after having trouble with another repair on a previous Sony of mine he has decided not to repair any Sony’s any more! So I am exactly in the same place, with phone slowly dying. I have ordered a new phone as I need it for my business asap. Will contact Sony to find out any experienced with Sony repair people as I love this phone. Any recommendations for Australia?

I would highly suggest u to switch from this phone and never buy sony again. I had it fixed but the problem appeared again because it’s not about the hardware but the problem lies somewhere in the software as well. I bought the xz2 compact after I lost this phone due the repair person ending up breaking the flex cable of the screen. Unfortunately the xz2 comapct also developed a touchscreen fault after 4 months of use. Don’t buy sony there production doesn’t worth it just buy an iPhone 7 they last longer.

I love sony, there are problems with all makes of phones, even dare I say, Iphone, I'm staying with Sony as unlike other phones, I don't have to worry about cracking/breaking screen, as previously had with others, when you get screens repaired, they do crack again as in my opinion, screens aren't sealed down enough like when first made, had my xperia xz few years now, never had to protect screen with an ugly case, and I have dropped it a few times no breaks and it still looks good, it's not charging as well now, same problem, as above, going to look for a pad type charger incase it gets worse, and eventually renew my phone, I'm sticking with Sony :)

Jupp, that seems to be it, gotta fetch either a hot air station or just a soldering iron. (the back is off and I’m applying pressure onto the plastic cover directly above the C-port/BtB-port connector on the motherboard)

Could it be so simple that the USB-flex cable isn’t plugged in properly to the motherboard?

So when you put some good amount of pressure at the bottom of the phone it gets a good enough connection to make it charge.

From your question i’m not sure if you want to repair the device yourself or are just asking to see if it’s repairable.

If what i’m saying is true you would only have to remove the back cover/glass from the phone, which is glued.

Then remove a few screws , remove plastic bracket and then plug in the USB-port connector to the motherboard.

Thank you for the reply Pontus what I was trying to ask was that what is the cause of that problem since you told that it might be loose connection with the motherboard I'll try to get it fixed.

さんによる

That's the only logical explanation i can come up with since you're saying it charges when you put a lot of pressure down at the usb-port. Hope you find a way to get it fixed :)

さんによる

So after opening up my phone I checked the flex cable it was connected properly and I also removed it and connected it again but it didn't work the only thing that worked was to still press the flex cable where it connects to the motherboard and the phone starts charging one more thing the flex cable gets hot where I apply pressure sorry for my bad english

さんによる

Have you tried cleaning the connectors?

It's all about debugging now. If you know any phone part suppliers in your country i think you should look for a new XZ Premium USB-port. I can get my hands on one for about 10 USD with shipping here in Sweden so the part isn't really expensive.

さんによる

Hi, put pressure exactly where the charging cable goes in and hold for some seconds then it will start charging from alone .

Hi, thanks for the solution. I va the same issue even after replacing charging port, then found it works when applying pressure on the cable connect the main board.
