Noticable Slowness on Opening and Running Program

Hello,

Starting from about 6 months ago, there is a sudden noticeable lag when I am trying to open heavy programs and running games. However, the computer’s boot speed is not affected.

My computer is about 4.5 years old. Here are the specs:

Intel Xeon E5 2660 V4 2.0 ghz 14 cores

G Skill Ripjaws 4 series 64 gb (8x8) DDR4 2400

ASRock X99 Extreme4 LGA 2011-v3

2x GTX 980 Ti G1 Gaming

850 Watt EVGA Gold PSU

Crucial 1tb SSD (OS installation & Sketchup)

WD black 1tb HDD (games)

I ran the same Sketchup files and games on my laptop (Asus Zephyrus M gm501) but there are no issues. Sketchup File opens almost instantly and there are no fps drops on the games.

I suspect that one of these might have caused it:

  1. Slow CPU clock speed - Hence needing an upgrade
  2. Dying HDD (no issues found when I ran block check) - Solution is to upgrade to 1tb SSD
  3. Dying RAM (no issues found when I ran RAM test)
  4. Registry errors

At this point I am thinking on reinstalling windows but that is too much of a hustle. Any solutions?

Thanks,

Marvin

Hi Marvin

Had you tried checking if there is a BIOS update for your mainboard?

what software did you check for your WD?

Had you test with another sata cables or shift to another port to check?

or try removing the WD HDD and observe ...

Hello Augustine,

I am not touching BIOS update since the risk it poses.

I used windows’ chkdsk and wmic, and WD Data Lifeguard.

I am going to see if the port sata cable shift works.

However, can you explain further whats the purpose of removing the HDD?

Thanks,

Marvin

have you checked the simple things like programmes running in the background or sending/receiving notifications etc that is slowing your games? we had this and the culprit was a security programme gone rogue.

Have you:

Done a full malware scan?

Done a Windows Update to latest 1809?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software...

Updated all drivers - IObit’s “Driver Booster 6” work well for me?

Of course it can be a hardware fault, and never dismiss that possibility, but over the years (30+) I have found that drivers, especially video drivers, are the main culprit.
