Is it possible to upgrade mac pro 2008 to mac pro 2010?

I want to buy the motherboard and processors offered in the mid-2010 model and put them in my 2008 model. I'm aware that the 2008 has a different processor cage than that of the 2010. To do the upgrade, is it just as simple as buying a 2010 processor cage/tray and put them in the 2008? If not what else?

Thank you.

I don't believe it's possible, as the case for each model is slightly different. A quick eBay search will reveal that there are several different part/model numbers on cases from different "generations". I do not own a Mac Pro, so I cannot verify this, but I have worked on several PowerMac G5's (and many other Macs) and they use different cases for different configurations. Ex: A Mid-2004 (Air Cooled) G5 tower has different motherboard mounting posts than a late 2005 (Liquid Cooled) model, making installing a different motherboard impossible. I would assume that the same applies to Mac Pros, but anyone who has more experience with Mac Pros should feel free to correct me.

Unfortunately no you can't do this upgrade. The two units do not have compatible cage fans as the 2008 has two riser cards for the memory and the 2010 has a board that is called the processor tray vs the backplane board ( older models this was referred to as the main logic board. ) The 2010 processor tray is a tray that holds the ram, heatsinks, and processors. The 2008 Mac Pro had the riser cards that only contained the ram. The heatsinks and processors were attached to the main logic board. The upgrade will not be possible and wouldn't function properly.
