Is it safe to use?
My wife put a metal bowl in the microwave, with predictable results--flashes, etc, including a hole melted through the door. Can I just replace the door, or should I replace the whole thing?

These things will kill you and they are cheap. Very few things do I recommend pitching but a microwave is one of them.

+ definitely agree with that one.
It melted a hole in the door? That's the damage you can see... I'd agree your appliance is unsafe and skip it!
I'd eBay it. Plenty of Pro's get their hard to find spare off eBay and at least some of it will be recycled! Better than all going to waste IMO
