PLEASE HELP! Extreme performance issues

I’m facing very slow performances in Windows only (boot up included). When I am playing games I have no issues. Programs sometimes lag and sometimes don’t. I tried reinstalling Windows, updating all drivers, updating the BIOS, running benchmarking apps to try to find the source of the issue and changing the total paging file size for all drives in the virtual memory and still nothing. I only noticed that the HDD usage is extremely high when it lags. The computer is an ASUS N750JV (i7 4700HQ, 12GB RAM, 2TB HDD, Nvidia GT 750M) running Windows 10. PLEASE HELP!!!

The results (images) are attached as you requested jayeff. Safe mode and toggling superfetch had no effect on performance. Sorry for not posting my message in comments, as I can’t add images there.

Hi @crogamer_1 ,

Have you tried starting in safe mode to see how Windows performs?

Try running sfc command to see if the system files are correct.

Are there any events listed in Event Viewer that may give a clue as to what is happening?

Check the value of superfetch just in case there is a problem there.

What are the 114 Error events listed in Event Viewer?

Click (double click?) on the Error entry row to expand the results and see if they are all the same event ID type.

if they are the same search online using the Event ID info to find out what is the cause of the event.

Usually Critical and Error events are not a good sign especially if it is always the same event.

Warning events are less of a problem although 227 in 7 days is a lot, unless they all happened at once when you were doing something, which may have been the case as there was only 1 in the last 24 hours.

Information and Audit success events are self explanatory.

I looked at the Error entry row and found out that DistributedCOM failed the most (at every boot 1-2 times). Upon fixing the error I noticed that all helll broke loose in the Event Viewer. I didn't notice any performance improvements after applying the "fix". Afterwards, I reverted the changes done to the DistributedCOM error to solve all other errors and warnings. Other errors that showed up in the Event Viewer appeared only once (on the next boot the error doesn't return). I'll keep looking at the DistributedCOM error

Regarding the Warning events, I didn't notice a recurring warning. All seem to be program related

OK.

When Windows lags or when you notice high HDD activity, open Task Manager (right click on taskbar) select Processes tab and check Disk column to see what process is using the most % of disk activity at the time.

Hi @crogamer_1 ,

When did you upgrade from Win 8.1 and did you update the Express cache driver as directed to by Asus on their support page?

This is shown on the Asus driver page for your laptop. Select Win 10 as the OS and look under the Utilities > Show All. Don't know if it is still relevant after 2015 though as Win 10 may have catered for it after that date.

You said that you updated all the drivers. Where did you get them from as the Asus page for your model has so few?

Here's a link to the latest Asus drivers for laptops. In the "other drivers' section it has the latest Express cache drivers.

I suggest if nothing else carefully update all the drivers "relevant" to your laptop (check in Device manager and programs and features) and see what happens.

Do it one at a time and wait to see if any other problems occur or if it fixes your problem before installing another one. If problems occur you can always roll back the driver.

Create a system restore point before you start that way you can always go back to what you had before you started.

If you go to update the ATK package and the Smart Gesture drivers, ensure that you install the ATK package FIRST before the Smart gesture otherwise you'll have touchpad and touchscreen (if you have this) problems

The ExpreesCache software did the trick. The laptop is running quite nicely now even though it failed to install the program haha. Boot up is now 10 seconds max and Windows is very responsive. HDD usage also fell.

Hi @crogamer_1 ,

Interesting that you said that it failed to install but that the laptop now works correctly.

Just out of curiosity, is there an appearance for Express Cache in Control Panel > Programs and Features or in Device Manager? If so check the version number is 1.3.118.0 to see if it is the latest version as per the link to the latest drivers if this is the one that you tried to install.

I don't know what may have happened during the "failed" installation process of the driver to correct the problem but whatever the reason I'm glad that it is working OK now. I was fast running out of ideas!

It sounds like the performance issues show up the most when there are disk operations involved in loading the programs. I would suspect that the hard drive is beginning to fail. What you are likely seeing is repeated read attempts to get data from the drive (also called retrys). I would either replace the drive with another of the same type or upgrade to an SSD drive. Replacing the drive with another similar drive should return the performance to the original purchase levels. Changing to an SSD may provide even better performance.

I'm not sure that the HDD is at fault. I tried running it through HD Tune to check its health. It passed with flying colors. Even benchmarking apps indicate that everything's ok which is strange enough if you ask me

The other possibility is memory which again would show up as a performance hit if it has not completely failed but is causing re-reads due to parity hits although I would expect this type of failure to show up in games as well.

If you have not cleaned the unit yet, clean the fan and the heatsink fins. Heat can also cause this. Games tend to use the graphics card more than the raw CPU which may be why the games don't show this problem as much. Try running a CPU stress program. If heat is the cause, this type of program will likely show it rather dramatically.

I'll go ahead and purchase an SSD tommorow and report back within a day

I completely agree with you but I haven't seen those symptoms on this unit yet. It gets a bit hot but not melting hot. I'll do the dust cleaning.

All in all, I will report in a days time with the results. Thank you :)

Hi there again Abrsvc, I did everything you asked. I swaped the HDD for the SSD, cleaned the unit and still nothing. The SSD was configured as the Windows boot drive. I really don’t have any ideas left to what the issue might be. It’s like Windows is incompatible with my hardware

I was assuming that this unit worked well at some point and that the performance problems were a recent occurrence. Is this correct? If so, than I would look toward a heat problem as the most likely cause. Replace the heatsink compound on the CPU chip with new and make sure that the fan is working and clean.

If this is a new system and has always performed this way, then there is a problem with the motherboard or memory that is not showing up in the diagnostics. If there are 2 memory cards, swap their position. This can sometimes have memory problems get logged. Some of the system primitives may not be able to record errors early on in the boot process.

Keep us posted on any progress.

You’re right on the money! That old and dated Hard Drive is what is slowing you down! Upgrading to a SSD should boost your speeds. I suggest getting a minimum of a 1 TB SSD just in case you start running out of space again (that will slow your computer down again)

Shouldn't games also be slowing down if the HDD is at fault? AFAIK Windows demands less from the HDD than games.

We are talking about 1 minute load times for the Control Panel
