Why is my drain pipe overflowing?

My washer has been causing overflow in the drain pipe. We used a Drain King on the pipe and ran a hose full blast down the pipe afterwards with no overflow problems. But when the washer drains, it continues to overflow. Having ruled out the drain pipe being the issue, I can only imagine that there is a drain sensor or the drain pump that is no longer inhibiting the flow to a rate that the pipe should be able to handle without overflowing. Thoughts?

we have this issue too. Washer is at least 10 years old. Only overflows at the beginning of draining. Then it doesn't overflow. Like there is too much water pressure initially.

Drain pipe is clear (again only during the initial beginning of draining the water does it overflow). Washer is against a exterior wall with cleanout just outside so we know it isn't plugged.

If the newer washing machines discharge pressure is too high for older drainage systems…. As posted by Mr. Philip Martinez!! I would think some type of warning should be given to the potential buyer…. So they would know that now…. The cost of buying the new washing machine…. Will also encompass the cost of upgrading the gray waters drainage system!! Which to me should have some type of Credit or Incentive included within the sale…. To go towards the cost of the gray waters drainage systems upgrading…. So it accommodates for the higher PSI’S of the new washing machine’s discharge… It’s the only fair thing to do…. I would think anyway!!

If your Kenmore 110 Series Washing Machine is not draining after a wash cycle, see the Kenmore 110 Series Washing Machine Won’t Drain problem page for possible causes and solutions.

What causes an overflow?

Several circumstances can cause your washing machine drain pipe to overflow. The most likely problem is a clogged drainpipe. Lint — short pieces of fine fabric — detaches from your clothing during the wash and is a common culprit in clogged drain pipes. Of course, there are other issues — deteriorating pipes, a kinked discharge hose, main sewer line blockages, and inadequately sized drain pipes — that can cause a washing machine overflow.

What you can do?

If your washing machine is overflowing, you should immediately turn it off to stem the flow of water. Next, it is imperative that you clean up the water as soon as possible, to avoid possible extensive water damage to the walls, baseboards, and flooring. A fan or dehumidifier is ideal for drying out the wet area. Before calling a plumber, check that the discharge hose is still inserted into the drainpipe: It’s possible that it has become pulled out of the drain pipe.

Preventive measures

  • To reduce the chances of a clogged drainpipe or discharge hose, use a garment or lint bag during the wash whenever possible.
  • If your washing machine is equipped with a lint trap or filter, inspect and clean it at least once a month.
  • Verify that there is at least half an inch of clearance between the drain pipe and the discharge hose, to allow for the proper ventilation required for drainage.
  • Verify that the discharge hose is permanently attached to the drainpipe, to prevent the hose from vibrating out.

A common problem is an old house with a newer washer. Older homes have a drain pipe of 1 1/2in, newer ones now have 2 3/8in. The smaller pipe can have issues keeping up with newer washers.

Solution is to replace the pipe with a larger one. Depending on your plumbing skills, it not too hard a job.
