My dryer won’t start

My Kenmore elite dryer was working great but now won’t start. I had an appliance repair person come out and tell me that is was the timer. I ordered the new timer and put it in. Still not starting, so I replaced the fuse and the door switch. I’m out of ideas. There is a hum when you press the start button so the power is getting to the timer.

thoughts?

Most dryers have a thermistor that senses moisture. If your vent hose is linked or the venting through the wall is clogged the thermistor will stop the dryer. The thermistor acts like a fuse. Unplug dryer, remove the back panel. The thermistor is white and rectangle shaped about 1.5” long. Test with multimeter set for ohms. Remove the wires and you should have 1.0 ohms. If you have no ohms it’s bad. One 1/4” screw holds it in place. Easy peasy. Don’t forget to clean you vent hose and the duct to vent outside.

If it's the motor buzzing/humming when the start button is pushed then it likely has a bad motor. Open the door and manually reach in and rotate the drum in the counter clockwise direction for a couple of complete revolutions and then shut the door and see if the dryer will start. If the dryer starts; this would indicate a bad motor and it will need to be replaced. If it does not start and continues to hum try this; Open the door and press and hold the door switch in. Rotate the drum counter clockwise and have some one press start while the drum is turning. If the dryer starts, replace the motor.

Door Switch

The door switch activates when the dryer door is closed. On most dryers, the door switch makes an audible clicking sound when it activates. To determine if the door switch is working, try starting your dryer and then listen for the “click.” If the door switch makes a clicking sound, it is probably not defective. If you don’t hear a click, use a multimeter to use the door switch for continuity. If the switch does not have continuity, replace it.

There is absolutely no question you have a bad motor.

My dryer also does not start. I don't hear a "buzzing/humming" noise however. It worked fine last week when I used it! Help!!!

@deehanson Although I agree the problem is probably related to the motor, it's not necessarily the motor itself; it could well be the motor start capacitor has failed and isn't generating enough power to overcome the resting inertia of the drum.

However, it's impossible to say for sure without knowing the make and model of your dryer. Add that information here, Dee, and we'll see if we can help you figure out what's going on with your dryer.

Hi I have the same issue. Buzzing/humming" noise when trying to start. Switch seems to be fine, click sound there, light goes off when switch is activated. Cant get drum started up with manually rotating it.

Kenmore 110. C76822695, type: CWSR-NAT-1206006-CV22

Please let me know if any ideas. Thank you

Did you hold the door switch operated when manually rotating the drum to see if it then continued on its own?

Hello Lora,

From what you’ve said it, it definitely is the motor. Here is a link to repair clinic and their selection of motors, and prices; https://www.repairclinic.com/Shop-For-Pa... .

I hope this helps you!

Hi @julio73694

If it is hard to manually rotate it could be a faulty idler pulley.

Here's a video that shows how to replace it that may help you to see if it is OK or not.

If the pulley is OK, try removing the belt from the drum and check if the drum rotates easily by hand, just to check that the drum bearings are OK and if so it seems as though there's a problem with the motor.

If you find the problem and it is a faulty part that needs replacing, here's the part list for the model that is useful.

Locate the wanted part in the list and you'll find the manufacturer's part number for the part listed with the part. Search online for the part number to find suppliers that suit you best.
