This could be a power supply problem or a problem with the main logic board. Since a reset seems to resolve the problem, I am leaning toward a power problem. There are logic components inside that essentially use 5V and 0V as 1 and 0. If the 5V line is too low (not 5V), it is possible that the logic circuits can get somewhat “confused” and not work properly. While rare, it is possible.

Please provide a model number so we can check the prints for some ideas. Also, it would help to post a few pictures of the boards inside the set.
