IPad repeatedly reboots iOS 10.3.3

my IPad 4 repeatedly reboots. Apple support tell me it is a hardware issue possibly the battery. I’m not convinced. Today I decided to investigate further. And I want to report my findings here to see if anyone can shed further light.

I investigated by recording the time between reboots and found a pattern. So I investigated further by recording the time between reboots continuously over a two hour period. And this showed a near constant time of 3 minutes and 30 seconds regardless of what the iPad was doing. On some trials I left the iPad idle... on others I used YouTube and on others I browsed and on others I was downloading. And I did it with the charger cable connected and disconnected. It didn’t matter what the situation was, the time between reboots was always 3 minutes 30 seconds allowing for changes in my reaction time (1 or 2 seconds).

Other than rebooting, everything else works perfectly. The IPad is charging ok and holding its charge ok and the screen is as good as ever. This doesn’t sound like a hardware issue to me as Apple support suggested to me. I think It is more like a software bug or a virus possibly. And it must be the os software as I removed all downloaded apps apart from YouTube and possibly one or two more.

What do you think? I will be grateful for any input.

To be certain, use a battery utility, such as coconutBattery (for Mac) or 3uTools (for Windows). Anything less than 70% of design capacity will require replacement.

IMHO, this is a hardware issue. What has happened to the iPad in the days and weeks leading up to this issue; was it dropped or damaged, repaired or came into contact with water?

Thank you very much for your response.

the battery bar shows 100% charged. So are you suggesting that this could still mean a smaller charge stored in the battery than a new battery showing 100% charged? Is this correct?

also, is there an IPad App that checks the battery directly from the IPad rather than via the pc?

many thanks…

I used battery life app for IPad and it showed that my battery is only 18% degraded. And this confirms what I know as the battery charges ok and does not deplete fast. I have uploaded a snapshot of the App result but its not showing.

i think we need to focus on the constant time of 3 minutes and 30 seconds between reboots. Why a constant time? It is like it is following a clock. Apple recently admitted tampering with older phones through their software. Is someone at Apple having a laugh at our expense again? It doesn’t make sense to me at all. Hardware problems normally cause the device to either work or not work. And if it works intermittently then I expect it to be random and not follow a clock.

Am I thinking correctly here or am I miscalculating?

many thanks
