Display beginning to dim from the left towards center

The display on my brother's MacBook Pro 17" 2.5 GHZ (early 2008) has begun to dim, but just on the left side, as though one column of lights began to dim (it's not entirely out, just darker). Yesterday, the dimness extended to almost the center of the display, while the right side of the display is still normal.

It still functions fine when in closed-lid mode with an external monitor.

I found this thread about a stand-alone monitor starting to dim:

My mac display is dimming!

One person suggested that the inverter board is in need of replacement in that case, but it's a bit too much to generalize that case and apply it to a laptop.

Does this sound like a bad inverter board?

This does not sound like an inverter problem. This is a failing CCFL backlight tube. Do a search on this site for "half screen problems", I've marked a lot of them. This is the most complete question I did on this issue: CCFL Backlight Repair and Information

Your best bet o0n this one will be to replace the LCD

This is the guide you may want to use: MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 LCD Replacement

Do a search for these part numbers: 661-4626, 661-4627
