Error code 36 when moving/copying files. Tried most fixes but no luck

I have an external drive that I work off of. Lately I've noticed my backup system failing when it runs. I then noticed that the cause was that it would hit certain files. Tried to copy them manually to another drive and would keep getting the 36 error code. I've been researching for the past few days and have tried the dot_clean Terminal command to no avail. I've tried disk repairs, and software meant to "fix" things and still no luck. Initially it was just files which I had downloaded from Google Drive to my external drive but now I'm starting to run in to the same problem with files I've exported out of apps right from my own desktop. Could this be a sign that the drive is failing? Disk checks never come back with any warnings.
