Could the magnet cause the optical drive to close?

I recently changed out the hard drive on a G4 iBook. I started it up and put in the startup dvd at which point the drive locked shut and will not detect or eject the dvd. I'm wondering if the magnet that sits on top of the optical drive has anything to do with it. I noticed that the case of the optical drive is magnetized and might be pulling the locking mechanism up and holding it in the closed position. My titanium powerbook at least had a manual eject button in case such a problem arises, not so with this drive....something to re-think, Apple!

Firdt try starting up while holding down the trackpad button. That failing you may have to try reseating the optical drive cable both to the drive and to the logic board. If that fails disconnect the optical drive and remove it and open to get your disk back. Then use Target Mode via a firewire cable to hook it up to another Mac and start up holding down the "T" key. Use the DVD drive on the other machine to format and install a new system on the G$. Do not use an Intel processor machine to do this. I don't think the magnet has anything to do with your problem.

I've tried all of your suggestions prior to posting my question (problem), with the exception of the target-mode method. Although target-mode would allow me to install a new os on the new drive, it does not remedy the problem of a malfunctioning optical drive. I just think it's strange that the optical drive would give me a problem after changing the hard drive. Nothing like this ever happened with the G3 iBook (white, not the clamshell), and I've taken apart and reassembled many of those with overwhelming success. I am going to put the original hard drive back in to see if it boots up normaly. I am not ruling out target-mode as a solution altogether. I will let you know the outcome.
