Why after taking a shot my camera states its recording

I have had this problem for a little while now, I charge my battery up fully, and when I come to take photo's I can take maybe 1/2 dozen shots then when I take the next the red battery light comes on and a message stated recording.

I I swith the camera off the battery light stays on and drains the battery.

Has anyone got any Idea what is wrong?
