Hey Wayne,

There are definitely dangers in using a heat gun but it has been the industry standard for softening adhesive for part removal for years. Those dangers primarily being heating parts of the device that you do not intend to heat. If the "pry tool" you are referring to is the iFixit iOpener, then I would highly recommend using that. It is a fantastic tool for only applying heat to the areas that you intend to do so on and it has been a joy for me to use on past repairs.

I'm thinking you are talking about the bag that you heat in the microwave for apply heat to the glass. It';s an OK tool but slow and probably very good for a beginner. Using a heat gun takes some practice. It is very easy to over heat. On a product with an LCD-LED display, overheating and damage the display and you get white areas. I am speaking from experience because I have done it. On a MacBook Pro you can melt the clutch cover, melt the rubber gasket. I like to soften one corner then put a plastic card or guitar pick in. That puts upward pressure on the glass. The I slowly heat the glass closest to the pry oil it starts to release. I am allways moving the heat back and forth to prevent hot spots. As it comes loose I insert more picks to help hold it open and so it will not restock as it cools back down.
