Store replaced battery now speaker doesn’t work

Hello, I needed my IPhone 5S battery replaced. I went to a place that had all 5stars reviews, 33 people. They didn’t even replace my battery. I went back and told them that the NEW battery wouldn’t even last half a day while not being used. Literally no difference then when I took it to be replaced. He got really mad, but told me he would make it right and replace my battery.

Now I have the problem with my phone’s speaker won’t play music and I can barley hear from the ear speaker at full volume. I’m afraid to take my phone back for a 3rd time. Can someone help me?!? Please!

Hello Kelsea,

To be clear, it sounds like after the second visit, your earpiece speaker (at the top of the phone) now has very low volume and the loudspeaker (at the bottom) does not work at all. Is this correct?

The easiest way to get at the battery adhesive pull tabs on an iPhone 5s is to remove the loudspeaker first. The technician may have taken the loudspeaker out and accidentally bent one of the connection pins before putting it back in. This would be an easy mistake to make. It's also easy to fix.

The earpiece situation concerns me though because it is not so easy to cause this problem in error. Let me take you through my thought process. Each of your three problems has several common or likely causes:

1. Poor Battery life

A. Normal aging of the original battery

B. Poor quality new battery installed

C. High power consumption by phone due to previous water damage.

2. Loudspeaker does not work at all

A. Loudspeaker misaligned by technician

B. Technician damaged audio amplifier on motherboard by accidentally hitting it with a tool.

C. Loudspeaker damaged or audio chip on motherboard damaged by water-damage.

3. Earpiece speaker volume very low

A. Earpiece hole clogged with dirt

B. Cable leading to earpiece damaged by technician.

C. Technician damaged audio amplifier chip on motherboard by accidentally hitting it with a tool.

D. Earpiece speaker or the cable leading to the earpiece damaged by water.

So while at no point above did you mention water damage, I suspect this is also a possible cause of your many issues. We know a technician openned your phone, possibly touching each of these systems. However to cause these three symptoms, the technician would have to make a series of 2-3 separate mistakes. On the other hand, only a single instance of water damage could have caused all three symptoms.

Do you think there could be a history a water damage with you phone?

I don’t think it’s water damage because I’ve never gotten it wet or spilled anything on it. I’ve also been the only owner.
