The WiFi range on my laptop is poor.

Hey guys,

I couldn't exactly find my exact laptop on here but it's the Dell Inspiron 5547 .

A few weeks ago, I noticed as I moved away from my WiFi router, I would lose my WiFi connection. I restarted the modem , forgot the WiFi on my laptop, tried to reconnect, the whole jazz, but the issue persisted. I ignored it as It wasn't a big deal at the time.

Now I've moved to a new house, have a new WiFi provider and yet the issue is still there. I suspect it has something to do with the laptop rather than my modem. I'm not sure how to go from here whether I have to buy one of those USB WiFi receivers or send it to repair (I apologize for my lack of knowledge as I'm not really an expert when it comes to tech situations). I am completely fine buying anything that can solve this issue but before that I'd like to know from this community if I'm missing something here.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi @uniqueusername3 ,

The antenna cables connected to the WLAN card (WiFi) may be loose.

Here is a link to the owner manual for your laptop.

Scroll to p.24 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the WLAN card.

You don't have to remove the card but it is advisable to know the correct procedure if you are going to 'handle' components inside a laptop, i.e. at least remove the battery. ;-)

Check that the antennae are both securely connected to the card. (see image 1 on p.24)

Hey man,

Loved your advice. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to help. Appreciate it. But I've encountered another problem.

As I looked at my WiFi card, both of the anttenaes were completely out. As well the copper (end) of the wire was also out.

I'll link the image below. How do I go on from here?

Hey man,

I just shot an answer your way with text and a link to an image site to describe my situation; however; it unfortunately got marked down as spam.

Anyway, first I'd like to thank you for taking time out of your day to help me. Second, I think im kinda &&^&@@ but I'm not sure how to go on from here.

Basically I looked at my WiFi card and noticed BOTH of the wires were out and the ENDS of the wires were attached to the card rather than the wire. I seriously think im screwed and I'm new to the site so I'm not sure if I can message you the picture or what.

But if you can't help, that's fine, at least I'm aware of the problem.

Thanks again,

Arsum

Hi @uniqueusername3 ,

Takes a few close up pictures so that we can see what you can see, and post them back here.

Here's how to do it.

Just added an image. I can upload more if you'd like.

If you can't identify the problem, sorry about that, here's an explanation.

The end of the wires/antennaes that goes on the WiFi card (that copper end, I put one on the laptop and one on the WiFi card just to show you. I can't get these ends into the wires because its not supposed to just be broken off so I could plug it on the card. Do I need a new wire?

Hi @uniqueusername3 ,

Yes.

Unfortunately being co-axial type connections you cannot easily just solder them back onto the connectors,

Here is the part number for the WiFi antenna, - F6T7J. Search online to get suppliers of the part. (You only need to put the number in the search box, nothing else)

The manual should show how to remove/replace it, although it may be part of some other component's removal/replacement procedure. I haven't checked that out ;-)

Bit strange how your connections came to be like that. Coming adrift from the board connector I can understand but coming out of the connector itself seems as though it wasn't manufactured properly in the first place. If the laptop is still under warranty contact Dell about it to hopefully get it fixed (or at least paid for) by them. (although they'll probably dismiss it as user abuse) It never hurts to ask.

You should replace the wifi card with any other card that fits if you get the keyboard out you'll see the wifi card just get a regular wifi card I put a Mac one in there so anything should work
