Line *** is in use or no line

Greetings all.

My first question here.

my user has two headsets, line 1 and line 2 on a landline.

If someone picks up line 1 on a call coming in, puts the caller on hold and either picks up line 2 or asks someone else to pick line 2, the pick that picks up line 2 hears a dial tone.

Same thing happens if the user picks up line2, puts it on hold and picks up on line 1, the user hears dial tone. The caller who is put on hold hears nothing.

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this problem?

I have tried powering off the phones for a few seconds, powering back on. It doesn't solve the problem.

I have tried switching lines but problem persists.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

What phone system are you using?

The ATT CL2940 (as you have selected in your question) is a single line telephone so I don't understand when you say calls on Line 1 and Line 2.

Do you have 2 landline numbers both appearing on two phones?

Also didn't you mean to say that when the call is placed on hold on Line 1, when they pick up "Line 1" on the other phone to answer the caller, they get dial tone and not the caller, not Line 2 as you said?

if not otherwise what is the problem? You haven't said that there is an i/c call on the other line, so if Line 1 is answered and on hold, why wouldn't Line 2 have dial tone on pickup. The same goes if there is an i/c call on Line 2 that is answered and on hold, with no i/c call on Line 1 you should get dial tone on pick up.

Normally, with most systems, when on hold the caller should hear nothing, except if music or recorded announcements are played on hold, until they are taken off hold.

First, the phone I selected was based on the options available.

The actual headsets are designed to communicate with each other.

The way it is intended to work is that if I receive a call on line 1, put the caller on hold and go to line 2 to pick up that call, I should be able to get that same call on line 2.

It worked like that for a long time.

Yes, you are correct that if you put the caller on hold, the caller would not be able to hear anything. However, when you pick the call that was placed on hold on line1 from line 2, you should be able to communicate with the caller.

In this case, when you pick up that call on line 2, you get a dial tone and the caller of course would not hear you because line 1 and line 2 are no longer in sync with each other.

Sorry, I could not post all the comments because of space restriction. Here is the rest of the comment for my initial post.

The key issue here is that when you are on line 1, you see a message on that line that line 2 is either in use or no line.

Similarly, when you are on line 2, the message on that phone says line 1 is in use or no line.

If this part of the problem is resolved, I am sure it will resolve the on hold / dial tone issue.

I hope this clarifies things. If not, kindly let me know what other piece of the puzzle is missing.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

What are the make and model numbers of the headsets?

So 1 telephone line with 2 headsets that can answer and hold the call and the call can be effectively "transferred" to either headset by them pressing the appropriate button, it this correct?

Is the caller, when answered and put on hold by line 1, still there if you take the call off hold on Line 1? Give it a bit of time say whatever time it usually takes for line 2 to answer , perhaps 1 minute or 90 seconds

if not perhaps the hold is not working, but with the "hold" still activated by line 1 that is why you get *** or dial tone (caller has dropped out) when you go to answer it on line 2 and obviously vise versa.

Hi Jeff,

I will get the make and model numbers of the headsets tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, let me answer your questions.

You asked:

Yes, that's correct.

You asked:

Is the caller, when answered and put on hold by line 1, still there if you take the call off hold on Line 1?

Yes because they eventually hang up and call back to complain that suddenly they could not hear anything anymore.

Besides, we tried it by calling with our cellphones while there where the headsets are.

You said:

Give it a bit of time say whatever time it usually takes for line 2 to answer , perhaps 1 minute or 90 seconds

Both headsets are on same room. It takes less than 20 secs to pick up.

Hold is still there. You can still pick up the headset where line was on hold.

You get that dial tone immediately on the other line.

Thank you sir
