One to Nine isn't working on my keyboard and it's driving me nuts

Suddenly keys one til nine won't work. I found a bunch of people with the same problem and it seems very common, yet nobody has ever found a straight answer for it.

One thing that does work: pressing all the faulty keys at the same time. That seems to wake them up temporarily, which shows that hardware-wise, the keys are still connected and working.

To be honest, ever since I upgraded to High Sierra, this computer has gone downhill.

I fear the good times of Apple computers have reached a peak about three years ago.

If you're like me the Unibody is the still the ideal system function wise.

While I would love a newer system to gain the better display and more powerful CPU & GPU's and a bit less weight the loss of serviceability & ports keeps me grounded. There are hints Apple may be addressing their mis-steps for the working Pro's that need the ports and better battery.

Yeah man, that's exactly what I was discussing with the guy at the Genius Bar. Ever since Jobs died, they haven't done anything groundbreaking and started adding gimmicky stuff, like that touch bar. That's so lame.

We need better cpu, we need HD space, we need a longer lasting battery, we need USB'S and thunderbolts. I don't care if it's not as thing as a MacBook Air.

Did you have a liquid spill at some point into the keyboard? Your symptoms points to that.

Luckly, replacing the uppercase is so inexpensive on this series I would just do that. Here's the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Early 2011-Mid 2012) Upper Case and heres the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Upper Case Replacement. While replacing the keyboard alone is also possible this is by far the better path.

How would a liquid spill make the keyboard only work when all the keys are pressed at once? Something doesn't add up.

Lets look at how the keyboard works it is nothing more that a grid of wires (X & Y) when the wires intersect is where a switch shorts across them. So if you have any corrosion on the lines they can interfere with the electrical path. The act of pressing on all of the numbers just alters the signal path enough to allow it to work.

Give this a try, get a Bluetooth or USB wired keyboard does it encounter the same problem?
