Connect a USB keyboard and see if that works OK.
Shine a torch at an angle, close to the laptop's LCD screen and check if you can detect an image at all. It will be very faint so try this in a darkened room.

What OS is installed in the laptop?
Has it been dropped or gotten wet at all?
