Brand “itouchless” says it all. Opens and closes via motion sensor.

How to repair a touchless garbage lid?

Recently my parents’ itouchless garbage lid stopped opening automatically and I was wondering if there might be a possible fix for this. I tried to find videos online but didn’t have luck. Basically it seems the sensor works but the lid won’t open; it makes a noise like it’s trying but can’t . I suspect it’s the motor but not sure how to fix this easily.

I’d rather fix it than them having to buy a new one.

Has this thing got a brand name and model number?

さんによる

It's called an Itouchless garbage can not sure what the model number is.

i checked the 'parts' section of their website and i think it's the IT13MX model. They don't have very many models it seems

Sounds like the sensor may have gone out. Here's a replacement lid for it:

The plastic hinge that connects lid to the motor is broken.

I just went through the exact same frustration. Check underneath the on/off switch. Just flip a couple times to off/on. Bingo was the problem. Works like new👍

The vast majority of times it just needs to be turned off for no less than 5 minutes. Give that a try, nothing to lose.

I'll try that. It's been turned off for several days. I had just put in new batteries. No apparent power at all now.

The lid on bin was not working. I decided to switch the power off by using the switch at the back of the lid. After 10 minutes the switch was turned on and to my surprise the lid started working again. Problem solved.

さんによる

I tried cleaning the lid, especially around the sensor but to no avail. I tried changing the batteries. I tried turning off the back switch for 10min. I can still see the red and green lights from the sensor blink, so I think it must be the motor that is no longer working. I’ve had my sensorcan for more than 3 years so it’s no longer in warranty. They don’t make things to last. I guess it’s time to buy a new one :(

with mine, if you can hear the motor still operating, lift the lid and on the hinge you will see 2 crosshead screws (if the same as mine) remove the black plastic plate and you will see 2 black plastic L shaped spacers which secure the lid to the rotating spindle, nime had just popped out push them back into their slots on the pivot and you will also see 2 location mouldings on the inside of the plate you first removed.. make sure they line up and secure the spacers when you refit the plate and screw it back on... and presto! a working lid!!!

I'm constantly having this problem. I've changed batteries so much, turned it on and off, cleaned the inside but to no avail. I've even seen the batteries with this milky solution on them and I haven't had it for a year.

I dismantled the lid and found corrosion around the plug on the circuit board but one of the pins has snapped off or corroded away, I'm going to see if Morphy Richard's will send me the necessary parts to repair it myself as it's not even a year old.

Dont ever be too afraid to take something apart to see WHY it's broken, what have you got to lose? it's broken anyway! & putting it back together is just the reverse of what you did to take it apart! if you're getting older, it keeps your brain active, hones your memory skills, keeps your joints working, great for nimble fingers & dexterity, makes you concentrate and focus better, trains your eyesight to work a little bit harder, and it keeps you busy giving you something to do, once you get into it & realise you CAN do a lot more than you realised, it gives you a sense of purpose! even if it STILL doesnt work afterwards! didnt you enjoy the challenge???

Ok so I took everything apart (literally everything!lol) and it will close but it won’t open.. I see the motor working to open but there’s no power it looks like when I push the open button..?

Not many parts available to repair these bad boys. I have a similar problem with my trash can and determined that the electrical controller was bad but you cannot get that part and could not get technical info on the part. The OEM fix is to replace the entire lid at nearly half the cost of a new one!

さんによる

I want to replace my lid but cannot find it on the web.

さんによる

I followed your advice and got my lid working!!

Stephanie, did you look at your mother board (where the power comes from)? It sounds alot like a detached wire, or the open button is possibly bad. You would need to solder it back on it it's a detached wire which takes a little practice. You can find videos on YouTube that show you how, and you can purchase a cheap soldering tool/wood burner for like $15

@reedcameron Hello Tony & Reed, I also have the problem that the top cover doesn't stay in the slot -- so the gears remain engaged -- because there seems to be something missing (or broken off) in the back of the mechanism which would appear to be something that allows the bar in back of the lid to be held in place. If you have a photo of these spacers I suppose I could try and find something similar and/or 3d print it. I'm not sufficiently smart to imagine it from nothing. :( Thanks in advance for any information on what these clips look like. Cheers! Mark in SF - iTouchless Trash Can user :)

My iTouchless lid was stuck in the closed position so even manually I couldn’t open the lid without using excessive force. If you take apart the lid by removing the screws you’ll see an electric motor which turns a jointed arm connected to the lid hinge. For me this jointed arm was over extended so both joints were straight in a line. The electric motor needs a slight bend in the arm in order to turn the lid hinge. If you manually close the hinge a bit the motor will be able to close and open the lid. It works fine now!

My problem was that it didn’t want to open but made the noise like it wanted to open! Well I took it apart.. cleaned it, took whole sensor out. That wasn’t the problem.

The problem was a small screw inside the lid that helps turn the bar to open the lid!! Messed with it for over an hour! Check under plastic at hing of lid. You have to remove it. I just used a small screw I found laying around my junk drawer!

Abracadabra it opens!!!

Block Image

I have a different model, stainless steel with a set of sliding louvers that open and close with a motion sensor. There were two problems. The sliders are driven by a pair of ball chains on either side of the sliding louvers. When I first bought the can, one of the ball chains had one more ball than the other and the driving louver would jam due to misalignment. I took out the extra "link" by opening the track by loosening the screw in the picture and removing the extra ball. The device worked well for over a year. Today one of the ball chains jumped the track, again causing a misalignment and jamming. The fix was to expose the ball chains, and reset one of them to align with the other. Presto. Search for "iTouchless" to find the guide.

Hi all,

I was having a problem with my lid not opening even though I could tell it was trying. I unplugged the power and left it off and it would work for a little while but it would stop working again. The next time unplugged the lid and sprayed penetrating oil (WD-40 or something similar) where the lid hinges both from the top and inside the lid and the lid works great now. It’s only been a month but no issues up till now.

Bought a Morphy Richards bin which stopped opening after 6 months. Inside the clear plastic operating arm had broken. Managed to fabricate an aluminium one to replace. Works fine now

I have a Glad version of this kind of trash can and your problem sounds exactly like my problem. I took mine apart and determined that all it is is a little spring, probably weighs half an ounce. It basically is strong enough to open the lid with the assistance of the motor, which then closes the lid after 5 seconds by counteracting the spring. It provides enough tension to keep the lid open but not to cause it to open. So I know what to do to fix it, but I don't know where to find the right part. Or how to modify another part to fit the bill.
