It may be that the hard drive (HDD) has failed or has become corrupted.
Try entering BIOS when you start the laptop (should be a message on the screen soon after you turn it on to either press either F2 or Del -not quite sure which - to enter BIOS) and see if the there is an entry for the HDD listed under drives.
Check an option labeled "EFI", see if it is on or off. If it is on, turn it off. If it is off, then turn it on. Save changes exit the BIOS and restart the computer.
