Touchpad is not working

Hello,

I have a problem with my touchpad. It is not working and even the cursor is hidden, mouse works but I dont like using mouse.

My pc is ASUS X541UA, Win 10.

I tried to press fn+F9 and its only showing a a window that touchpad is disabled. Pressing on it more times and it still shows the same.

I also tried to go to devices and search for hidden devices and by clicking on touchpad device to enable it it shows a message like: This hardware device is not connected to PC, (code 45) . If you want to remove this problem, connect the hardware device to PC.

Also in hidden devices there is some I2C HID Device, which says the same thing, code 45.

Can you please help me?

I just had the exact problem. I am sitting here writing a paper and suddenly my cursor was gone. Thank God for a touchscreen laptop! I gave up and restarted it. That did the trick. I, too, checked in devices and everything else it told me to do. Said "device is working properly" .... umm no it's not :) Try just restarting. Sometimes it's the simplest thing that works.

Try reinstalling the touch pad drivers and restarting the device. If that does not work there could be a problem with the cable connecting the touch pad to the main board. Did you drop it or hit it hard lately?

I downloaded touchpad driver from ASUS website but when I run the setup ,a window pop up saying I already have driver of this type installed and i should first remove old one through Add and remove programs. But i cant find there anything called Touchpad driver and I dont know then how to uninstall the old one.

Also in hidden devices there is some I2C HID Device, which says the same thing, code 45.

It is under Device manager in the mouse section. Go to the control panel and then go to system. In system there is advanced system setting. Then go hardware and click on device manager. Should be under mice and other pointer devices. Right click and uninstall.

For me, I would say go with Acer or some other brand...

The housing material for most ASUS laptops is horrible, and this model is no exception - it is made from very thin, cheap, nasty plastic. Mine broke just half a year after I bought it. When buying, I thought - hey, it's the hardware that counts, no? Well, apparently, not so much, if the outside is breaking apart. I also have had issues with touch pad, as well as experienced shut-downs (and not turning back on). Those issues I fixed, but housing is more difficult to repair, as there are only a few replacement parts available, and they cost a lot.

Nevertheless, I must say that the operating system and the processor are working very well - the speed and overall performance is good, no complaints there.

Still, taking everything into count, I would gladly turn the time back and choose a different model. Heck, a different brand too! I would suggest Aspire 5 A515-51G, as that is what I am looking at at the moment.

Hope this helps. Good luck and take care!

I had the same issue with the touch pad for this model the day I bought it. Actually, this model has tons of different issues, but that is another story.

I managed to fix the tough pad issue by opening the panel and reattaching the connection wire which is attacked to the back of the panel of the touch pad. It apparently can become loose.

Perhaps that is your issue as well, in case if reinstalling of the driver does not work. Good luck!

What you'll be looking for in your list of 'apps' is this "ASUS Precision Touchpad".

So go to settings, apps, and wait for your apps and features to load what you have installed. You should see the above. Otherwise go here to this download section, it is for your model laptop. And use that to download your new device software. I suggest you do not update your bios unless you are very confidant of doing so. I've read a few problems with this number. (303)

Here is a good website that explains what Code 45 is and how to fix it, by running troubleshooter.

try to re-install that driver IDCHID device in hardware manager. Then go back to the “function Key and F9 and it will show “enable touchpad”. This worked for mine and BTW thanks for pointing me to that device.

I was using my mouse and typing, when I decided to disable the touchpad using the hot key - thinking there was an Enable Hotkey somewhere. Yeah, Asus probably does have one, but they didn’t share it with us. So, just so everyone is on the same page, this is a result of typing Fn and f9 simultaneously.

This was quite an easy fix, but it did take some researching time, before I simply said to myself, did I check it myself -I am an Engineer, so why did I not check it? I Simply did the following:

  1. Touch the Start Button,
  2. Then I touched the “Gear” (Settings) button at the bottom left, of the left side bar. ————Side Note: Stupid Microsoft can’t figure out that having two system settings locations {Control Panel and Settings (Gear)}, that are in two totally separate controls and totally different device options- is stooooopid. For all you Microsoft fan boys and girls, that is S T U P I D. Yes, I can type and spell. I just like having fun, so don’t take this serious. I am very tired of MS and their horrible approach to settings in general. Put them all in one single location, instead of making us go all over the road map. For example… anyone want to take a stab at adding MSconfig to the mix? It is utterly ridiculous that Microsoft can’t put everything in one place, where as, us, today, can’t even figure out how to turn ON our touchpads and other issues unrelated but at the same time related. Ok, that is my soapbox. I am done.
  3. Then, I touched “Devices”. hmmm… self explanatory.
  4. Then I touched “Touchpad” on the list of Devices to the left, under the grayed “Devices” word.
  5. Then there is an “On/Off” toggle for the Touchpad at the top of the screen. For me this was in the Off position. …..oh
  6. Touch that with your finger and it toggles to “On”.

And wha-la. All set.

The next thing I would be looking for are the list of Asus Hotkey List. I bet the related Hotkeys are something like “Ctrl + Alt + T”, simultaneously, or something dumb like that, that would enable the Touchpad.

Edit: I also did a search for Asus Keyboar Hotkeys and it turns out you can go to the Microsoft Store App and get “ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys” and this will make everything unhidden by displaying the status on the screen. I just tried it. It shows me the status of the Hotkey now and I can now Enable and Disable the Fn/f9 HotKey by pressing it multiple times. Perfect. Fixed.

Hi @Max Leps,

If your Asus laptop has Win 10 OS installed, try installing the latest Asus Win 10 ATK Package and Smart Gesture drivers from here and check if that resolves the problem.

Install the ATK package drivers first before installing the Smart gesture drivers.

Take heed of the “Notes:” regarding driver installation near the top of the page

Do not be tempted to update all your drivers from here at once as it may confuse the issue if problems arise. Fix one problem at a time.

Oh WOW

It fixed the issue so far

But I'm afraid it will come back :/

Thanks so much anyways!

@Max Leps ,

Time will tell but others have used these drivers before with no complaints except one who complained that it stopped working every time a Win update occurred i.e. about once per month, but they haven't got back about it yet so maybe it was a coincidence or something else.

Good luck
