Motherboard repair and OS
Would overheating when powered on, just sitting idle, be remedied by replacing motherboard? If so, do they come with OS pre-installed or would I need to flash OS?

How hot was it getting? Was it warm or too-hot-to-touch? Do you find that it charges properly? Does the battery last for a reasonable amount of time or does it die within an hour?
Android is installed on the internal NAND or ROM of the phone motherboard. If you buy just a motherboard replacement off ebay you may get one with android installed or you may get one that is blank and just has a bootloader. It depends on what the seller did to phone before he/she removed the motherboard.
If you are swapping a motherboard from a working phone and that working phone has android installed, than the resulting phone will have android installed since android was installed on the NAND of that motherboard.

Thanks for your reply. Too hot! After powering on, it would get to about 140 degrees F center of motherboard. It would rapidly discharge (within an hour) and die (zero). I replaced battery and same symptoms. Does it sound like a faulty charging cable?
I didn't see an easy way to contact sellers on ebay to check status of if motherboard having android installed but I'll keep checking.
Would you suggest replace charging cable before motherboard?

The battery is attached directly to the motherboard through a small connector. By charging cable, do you mean a USB cable, used for data transfer and charging? Before anything else, try using another USB cable to charge the phone and then see if the phone gets hot.
The only way a USB cable could cause the phone to get that hot is if some internal wires in the cable were shorting and the phone had no internal protections on USB. If you try another USB cable and the problem persists, it is likely a faulty charging circuit on the nexus 5 motherboard or a more advanced circuit problem on the motherboard.
When you are on ebay looking for replacement parts, like a motherboard, scroll down the ebay page and go to "ask a question" and ask the seller if he/she left android installed.
Also, keep in mind, if the repair parts become uneconomical, you can get another phone, like a nexus 6, and sell your nexus 5 as "for parts" on ebay.
