unable to turn on after reaplied thermal paste

i followed the ifixit guidance to remove the logic board of my MacBook Pro 2010 15" to reapplied the thermal paste, And I can't boot it up after I reinstalled it back, the fan turned for few second and the hard disk turned with one click sound and then every thing turn off.

it did turned on yesterday, after I repluged all the cable on logic board ,

But it failed to boot up again the to day, I tried to replug and reinstall the board again, but nothing work.

Should I reapplied the thermal paste ?

OK.. What thermal paste did you use. From what you describe is power cycling. This can be caused by literly anything, However, I'd make a guess that you used a conductive thermal paste and that spilled onto some of the electronic components (Capacitors mainly) on the CPU package and that is causing a short circuit. This is not damaging your CPU but can cause power cycling. I always use a ceramic based thermal paste such as Arctic Silver Alumia.

Good luck and let us know.

I can't find ceramic based thermal paste in my country. I think I have to purchase online.

I saw there are 3 type of thermal paste, may i know which one you are talking about?

Arctic Silver® 5

Céramique™ 2

Arctic Alumina™

Arctic Alumina or Ceramique 2 will work. Those are my 2 favorites.

Thermal paste has nothing to do with whether or not a laptop powers on initially. Way too much paste or no paste can cause overheating, but it should power on at least initially and stay on for a minute no matter how well or badly you applied the paste. Once the board is really hot, it will shut off in less time, i.e. the 5th time you power it on it might shut off in ten seconds, since it's already warmed up.

Therefore, the board installation is most likely the culprit. Take the board out and re-install it carefully. Make sure you are using the correct screws in the correct places and nothing is getting shorted.

As far as thermal paste, you only need to use a tiny drop the size of the head of a small screw. Any more than that, and the paste will spread too far and conduct heat where it shouldn't go. Make sure the previous paste has been completely removed and cleaned away with alcohol.

i think i had applied too much, and it spilled out a little bit .

will this cause the circuit short ? the components on the logic board are so small and very difficult to clean it.
