When I hook the battery cable up it jumps fire and then the alternator starts smoking any suggestions to what is going on

@steveb34 short circuit either in the plug or the alternator itself. Of course you have the battery connected properly....let us know what you have checked thus far. It will also help if you tell us the exact year and model of your Toyota

It's a 93 today 22re 4 wheel drive. I changed the alternator and the wiring going to the alternator and it still does the same thing. It all started out by blowing the 80 amp fuse now it doesn't blow the fuse it just starts smoking
