Do I have to remove the screen to replace LVDS cable?

I've looked at various guides and forums but I'm still unsure as to whether or not I HAVE to remove the LCD screen to replace the LVDS cable on my A1466 mid-2012 13" MacBook Air?

After a considerable amount of research, there's conflicting information about whether or not the screen must be removed for this task. I was hoping that someone could shed some light before I begin the most intense game of Operation ever :)

You don't have to remove the LCD screen from the assembly, but you do have to remove the assembly from the MacBook.

You need to heat and slide a thin tool under the silver bezel (painting knife). Be careful doing this along the bottom, as it is easy to cut the screen ribbon, which would mean replacing the screen. Usually, I go around the left right and top sides, the bottom and right corner, then the bottom middle (where it says MacBook Air). I then heat the bottom and pull it off, it doesn't bend this way and ensures the ribbons do not get ripped.

Once this is off, remove the hinge cover and unscrew the hinge screws holding the LCD cable in. Unscrew the screen board, unplug the backlight and LCD cable, then remove the rubber bezel slightly (which goes over the LCD cable) to be able to pull the LCD cable out.

Hope this helps. Google "a1369 lcd replacement" to see visually how to remove the bezel, screen board and generally see what this area looks like. You will not have to remove the LCD to do this.

I've not replaced myself the cable on that particular macbook model, but from what I can see from pictures the build is not that different from others. Lvds cable is hidden under the black plastic clutch cover and unless you plan to break it in pieces and let your cables hang around freely, you will need room to remove the cover and set it back to place after your replacement. You definetly need to remove the screen to be able to do that and it won't be too easy either, those covers of the Airs are a bit pesky. Also consider you'll have to remove the bezel to access the connector and you better do that in a comfortable lay flat position to work on the screen properly without damaging it.

Good luck with your Operation ;)
