Why doesn't it make a call?

When I pull up my contacts and select a name, the phone screen comes up, says "call ended" and then it goes back to my contacts! This happens up to ten times before my call finally goes through. This happens if I dial a number, select it from contacts, or click the link from a website. It is very annoying.
