Keyboard intermittently not working

Hey all,

So I just bought a used 2015 13" MacBook Pro retina (A1507) for a Christmas gift. Checked it out with the seller for almost 20min and it seemed to be flawless. Got it home, reinstalled MacOS, still working. After about 4 hours working on it the keyboard started to act up. Sure enough it's now not working 90% of the time. Every so often after I restart the computer it will come back to life for 1-10min, but this is not consistent and mostly doesn't work.

All that's said the track pad is working fine, no issues at all.

Reinstalled MacOS - same issue

Put it in the fridge to check battery swell - same issue

Removed bottom case again for battery swell - same issue

Power button works fine

Keyboard backlight works fine

Trackpad works fine (which I find very odd since I've read they both usually go together)

I'd like to try and fix it myself, I've done MacBook fixed in the past and I'm confident I can do it from what I have read..... albeit slowly

I could replace the lower case but I'm not really interesting in spending more that I already paid. I'm ok with replacing the 100 keyboard screws and going through the process..... what else are holidays for.

Question:

Is there anyway to tell if it's the logic board or the keyboard, or both?

Since it's just the keyboard not working and not keyboard and track pad, I'm learning toward just the keyboard - is this a fair assumption?

Does anyone have any good step by step links aside from the one on iFix it? I like to have two for reference just in case.

Any other suggestions on the process would be appreciated!! I'll post my step by step when I get dirty.

Thanks all

Thanks Guys,

I'll give the cable a try, not sure if this would resolve it because the track pad is working fine. That said for 10$ it's worth the shot

I did try holding down the D button during restart, but since the keyboard isn't communicating, I can't get the diagnostic to run.

If anyone has further feedback it would appreciated!!!!

@artyrob ah my bad, thought you said the trackpad was bad as well. Try a keyboard first, could have liquid damage on there.

Does anyone know IF the keyboard can even be replaced? I have read it's riveted in the place and you have a 1 in 10 chance to removing it and replacing it successfully.

@artyrob yes it is riveted in place, you just pull the rivets out using wire cutters. There is not a 1 in 10 chance of removing it, I have probably done over 100 Retina/Air keyboard replacements and not had an issue with a single one.

As long as you don't cut the rivet when trying to remove it, or don't have a good grip, you won't have a problem. If you mess up some, it is still stable, unless you mess up one of the edge ones (corner mainly) or a group of them together.

Can be unnerving if you haven't done one before, so if you are not sure if you can do it successfully, send it somewhere :) Plug in the keyboard to test it first though, to make sure it resolves your issue.

Did you find a fix for it. Mine is also same model and I mine do have the same issue. Thanks in advance!

Try the trackpad cable. See this a lot on 13" 2015 models, if the trackpad is not detected, the keyboard will not work also (at all). This is also backed up because it will usually work for a bit after restarting, and be very intermittent.

Cables are roughly £10 on eBay, go order one, easy to replace.

When you start it up, you can hold down the 'D' key and run built in diagnostics. This does not always give a good answer, but it is a good place to start.
