I periodically insert a safety pin into the top needle....then I choose and run the "hot water" function....you should notice grounds in your cup. Repeat the safety pin procedure until the water is void of grounds. Others may use a straightened paper clip. Be careful.
BTW: I often do this during the brewing process....the brewing stops when you lift the lid.
