Reinstalling back cover after disassembly?

I'm planning on buying a new battery and swapping it out on my Nexus 6. I've heard both that the cover is difficult to pry off and that the adhesive wears off with daily use (mine has not). My question is after you take it off does the cover's adhesive stay strong enough to be reused or would replacing that be a better option?
