The remote control does not pair with the with my device.
I tried to pair the remote control with the device and for some reason I can't get it to work or pair with the device. How can I pair the remote to the device?

If standard pairing process for remote does not work, it could be the software on the remote itself is out of date. To fix, put remote in pairing mode by holding play/pause button for 5 seconds. Then, instead of adding a remote, use the Alexa app to pair a standard Bluetooth device for the echo you want the remote paired to. You should see an option to connect a device with “remote" in its name. As soon as you select that device your echo will likely tell you the remote needs a software update and it will start that process for you. When it completes, the remote should automatically be paired with the echo.

I tried those steps and still no luck. I think the app might of updated and messed up something.
This worked for me, except it didn't show the device name, just it's Bluetooth MAC address (xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx); as soon as I paired it, my Echo Studio started the software update and the remote worked afterwards!
I tried so many other methods and just about gave up. This worked great.
Unknown Device popped up and I paied it. It immediately worked.
OMG!! I spent all day trying EVERYTHING until I came upon this post. Worked perfectly!! I was going crazy! Thank you!!!
Also... I looked all over Amazon help and they did not have this solution. Again, many thanks! : )

- Check that the remote has a fresh pair of AAA batteries.
- Go to Settings > Pair remote in the Alexa app, and then press and hold the remote's Play / Pause button for five seconds while Amazon Echo is searching.
- If you see a purple spinning light on your device, more than one remote was found. Press the Play / Pause button on the remote you want to connect with.
Note: The Amazon Echo Remote is sold seperately. Only one Amazon Echo Remote can be paired with Amazon Echo at a time.

Very good response! I would have added a link to the correct controller.
This response is really reiterating the instructions from the app, it is not helpful when you follow the instructions and it still won't pair.
The Alexa app recently updated. I have tried many times, many types of quality batteries, holding the remote at different angles, pressing play for 5, 10, even 20 seconds nothing.
The question was what do you do when the remote does not pair, not what are the standard instructions to pair.
I was having the same problem. I just unplugged the echo dot and plugged it back in and i was able to set up the remote. Maybe it’s worth a try.
I also have this problem, Amazon says it should still work with the echo. I did everything I have three remotes now and none work. I think the app update is the culprit.
Bingo - Amazon should clue Echo users on this tip.

However, in case if Alexa fails to hear your voice commands because the music’s too loud or because you’re sitting in a different room, you can now use the Amazon Echo Remote to communicate with Amazon Echo, and get things done.

There are two ways to pair an Echo Dot to a firestick.
The first way doesn't seem to work. In the Alexa app, when you go to devices and select your Echo Dot, it says you can link it to an echo remote. When you do this, it says to hold the play button for 5 seconds and this does not work. I've tried a hundred times by now.
The second way does work. In the Amazon app, go to More -> Settings. Scroll down to TV and Video. Select FireTV. Select Link or Manage Devices. I already have 3 dots linked to 3 different firesticks, so my options here may be a little different than yours. From here I select to "link another device". If it is your first link, it might just say "link device". Click to link another device. It will have you first select the Firestick you want to pair. Then it will show you a list of devices where you will select your Echo Dot.
That's it!
Now your Echo Dot will accept voice commands to control your FireTV.
