Sparks on my distributor cap/ Car wont start

A few days ago I drove through a pretty sizable puddle of water on the side of the road and my car suddenly shut off (while i was driving). 15 Min later, it started back up again no problem.

Yesterday, it rained all night and this morning my car wouldn't start. I hear the started turning so I know the battery is fine so i suspected I was not getting a spark. I then had a buddy turn the key while i was looking under the hood and every time he turned the key i saw a flickering spark on my distributor cap. I assume iv got a short in there due to humidity or water infiltration (its been raining/snowing for a couple days).

Any way to further trouble shoot it? Anything else I could check/ try before buying a new one and replacing it? What kind of additional damage could this have done to the other systems?

Any info helps

Easy fix:

  • Obtain a can of WD-40 ;)
  • Pop off the distributor cap (it's usually held on with spring clamps)
  • Clean & remove excess moisture with a cloth or strong tissue paper, both inside and outside the cap
  • Spray a shot of WD-40 inside the cap
  • Refit the cap
  • Spray a light coat of WD-40 on outside of cap

This should get your car going again.
