Troubleshoot Booting Problem, turns on, fans whiz for a moment

I need help troubleshooting the problem with my laptop. If I have the computer connected to the power and the battery is in its place, then the battery charging LED light turns on. If I press the power button, the fan whizzes, and the hard drive may make boot noises, but immediately after the everything goes silent. The power LED light remains on, but the screen does not display anything, not even the back-light in the screen. It will stay that way until I press the power button to turn it off.

Online, I was able to find some potential fixes, but none of them solved my problem.

  • Remove the battery, unplug from power source, press power button for 60 seconds, plug into power source, and turn on laptop.
  • Take out the DIMMs and put them back in.

How can I isolate the problem component? How can I diagnose the issue?

I am not afraid to open the computer, but I do not know where to go from here. Thanks for the help.

Hi, Sorry having trouble with website comments edit.

1. Can you get into BIOS? If so try booting of a bootable USB (after changing boot order in BIOS) and see if it works. Also try it with HDD removed.

2. You can remove the battery (with the laptop turned off ) then connect the power adapter turn it on then see if the laptop boots OK.

No error beep codes?

Maybe your charger is bad. Just a thought. If the battery is already discharged, and the charger is defective then it would startup/shutdown like that, no beep codes. See if you can borrow a charger from someone. Pretty much any Dell charger that fits will work, at least to charge the battery a bit and see if there is any difference.

It is probable that the mother board is defective. Test by removing all of the RAM and then turn it on, if the mother board is good you should either hear a beep code or see the Power, Disk and Wifi LEDs blink in a pattern. If you do not get a beep or blink pattern then the mother board is defective. If you can get into BIOS, check to see if the AC adapter is detected as the correct wattage, if you get "1 watt" the mother board is defective. If you can get into Diagnostics, you can run the tests to see what the problem is.

If the laptop display is blank, try connecting an external monitor. If the external monitor works then the problem is the display, if the external monitor does not work then the problem is the GPU which is on the mother board.
