How fix the on/off switch? It is frozen immobile

the A1211 kernel panicked in 2014, and failed again after an initial fix. I took it to an after-market guru who, despite his insufferable tech-snob manners, did a good fix and clean-up-to-speed for $800.
I then moved to a distant city where the switch came loose from whatever keeps it in place, and scooted a bit to the side, where it could still be effectively pressed with a pencil eraser. This worked for about a year, after which the switch simply failed to work, after a short time of being sporadically effective.
I then left the computer with a different after-market guy in the new city (nice guy, this time) to fix the switch, which he did for $170. Two weeks later now the switch has literally frozen in place---it will not move a millimeter.
I could not find a fix on this website, but it does seem a good place to attempt for the DIY which at this point seems advisable.

Re-reading the problem statement, I see I left out that I bought a new Marmot backpack to accommodate the fixed computer; the computer pocket zips shut separately from the main compartment zip, and opens separately and equally into the outside world. Not having habituated into this second order of closure I one day failed to zip in the Mac and as punishment it slid out of the pack and fell about four feet onto the concrete, and again it would not start. So, as soon as there is time, I have to use your advice, and plunge on both ahead and backward.
