iPhone battery percentage not changing, constant reboot cycle

Ok so my iPhone 5 has had this problem for a while where the battery percentage would never change if i'm using it, or charging it. This didn't bother me too much except for when it died since I didn't know what the battery was on. When I started to charge the phone and it rebooted, it would go into a constant reboot cycle which could only be stopped by plugging the charger in and out in between each reboot. I'm guessing the phone thinks it'd dead but it's actually not. So yesterday another problem started to happen. My phone died and the screen showing a red battery and a charger comes up. So i plug in my charger and the apple logo with the white background appears. It stays like this for a couple of seconds until I just see a spinning wheel and my phone goes black again. Sometimes I manage to get the phone back on again but then it just turns itself off and the same thing happens again. I'm guessing my phone needs logic board repair and I would like to know what exactly is wrong with my phone and if it can be repaired. Thank you.

Darragh Murray I'd start off with a new battery and while you change it, check the small components around the battery connector. Sounds like your phone is having issues with the "gas gauge" NTC circuit.

Yeah I'm bringing it to a shop to hopefully fix the problem since I'd have no clue about any of that thanks for the answer though :)

Hi Darragh,

I experienced something similar. My apple battery did not last for even a day since it had been "too old" (3 years) so I exchanged it with an ifixit battery. I was actually really amazed by the simplicity of changing the battery myself and everything worked well... until the phone got a little wet. I dried it directly and put it in a bag of rice (worst decision!). The phone seemed not to be damaged but grains of rice got stuck in the charging hole. Carefully, i removed the rice grains but from that moment on, my phone did not charge any more and slowly died. Apple told me the circuit board was broken and that I needed a new phone. So I took my sisters phone and put my ifixit battery inside. Interestingly, her phone with my ifixit battery behaved exactly like my phone did previously (constant booting cycles). So in the end, I guess the battery got damaged by the water or the rice?! I am now using my sister's phone but I want to try mine with a new battery. Has anybody experienced something similar and can tell me if my diagnosis is correct?

In the end I am happy I dont have to buy a new phone because I like mine so much :)

Thanks for any answers!

Adriana

I have a somewhat similar problem of constant rebooting, after a Staples battery replacement. Several friends had used the local store with good success and much less hassle than distant Genius Bar. It seemed okay at first, but the battery charge is low and it never stays booted long enough to restore my backup. What’s weird is that I tried spraying Dust-off into the connector to clean it out. This also chilled the connector area. Prior to spraying the percentage was 16 -18, but no higher, after spraying the percentage jumped to 34 to 38% (about double). Got about 20-minutes into a restore, then it rebooted again. Now the battery is reading 16-18 again. I’m going to take it back to Staples tomorrow to at least get my $30 back. They warranty nothing . I used to iFix laptops and desktops, but I don’t think I have the vision and touch to dig into iphones.
