Despite new batteries, my Bathroom Scales still does not work

My Starfrit Balance bathroom scale also stopped working and replacing the battery didn’t solve the problem. I turned it over, took out the screws holding the casing on and examined the feet that contacted the scale. Each little footpad had a metal disk that was supposed to connect with a corresponding metal sensor that was wired to the scale.

Each connection point was slightly oxidized, not a surprise considering that the scale lives in a humid environment. I cleaned both the foot side and the metal contact point on the scale with fine sandpaper to remove any oxidation. After putting everything back together and replacing the battery, it now works.
