Why isn't the 3DS recognizing my SD card?
It seems like my 3DS isn’t recognizing my SD card. When I insert my SD card, the 3DS is unable to read or write to the SD card.

The 3ds only recognizes cards up to 32gb, beyond that is not supported.
EDIT: Supposedly formatting a larger SD card to FAT32 should also allow it to work with the 3DS. This however would require a separate program as Windows doesn't allow you to do this.

Thank you I was trying a 128gb and it was making me mad that it wouldn't work. The 4gb he had still did so I tried the only other low one after finding your comment online here. I tried a 16gb and it works thank you so much for your comment it helped me out.
Can I just add to this that supposedly formatting your SD card to FAT32 should allow higher capacity cards to work, this isn't guaranteed though and 32GB is plenty of storage for such "small" games.

If the SD card is unable to be read, first check if the card is sliding smoothly into the card reader. There may be debris or other small particles blocking the card. If there is, remove the debris and replace the SD card. Make sure the spring lock is properly triggered.
If the SD card is still nonfunctional, the SD card itself may be broken/defective, and may need to be replaced.

I just fixed this issue on my son's 3DS-XL Purchased in Dec 2014. He said that a message saying the "The SD Card couldn't be recognized. Please end the game and start again." This started happening intermittently and now the card cannot be read.
I snapped some pics of the card connector in the 3DS with my phone to try and get a look at the pins. The contact for 4th pin (clock) was corroded. It looked much lighter yellow than the rest of the pins. I got a micro-SD adapter and cycled it in and out of the 3DS about 15 times. I put the original card and the card was recognized and everything seemed to work.

If the message that appears when attempting to read/write to the SD card matches what you are saying in the question, you will need to remove the SD card and flip the switch on the side to unlock it. This should fix your problem. Please note that it needs to be moved all the way to "unlock", and if the message still appears, flip it again and try again. If this is not your problem or this does not solve it, consult the answers below.
