How to replace only the screen/glass. No damage to lcd/phone otherwise
How can I change the only the glass? LCD is working fine.
The second generation Moto X (marketed as moto X) is an Android smartphone developed by Motorola Mobility. Released on September 5, 2014, it is the successor to the original Moto X released in 2013. Model numbers XT1097, XT1096, XT1095, and XT 1093.
No one has uploaded a guide for this particular repair yet, but we have some people saying that it is very similar to the teardown for the original Moto X. You can see what has been discussed in this thread: Moto X 2nd Gen screen replacement?
The glass itself is attached with adhesive, and easy to damage during a repair. It might be more time-effective to purchase the full display assembly somewhere. That would ensure a better chance of a successful repair.
I attempted the glass-only replacement in spite of discouraging words from a more experienced tech. You will need either a hot plate or a very low power heat gun (the glue melts around 180F), you will need lots of plastic picks and scrapers. And if you wanna do it right, you will needs hours and a lot of patience.
If you attempt this, keep the glass mostly parallel to the screen at all times, go really slow, and apply enough heat. I was afraid of overheating the phone, and so the glue in the area i was pulling the glass off of had not fully melted. Well, the LCD is surprisingly scratch resistant, so that was not a problem, but it will still crack. And it did.
You can find a new digitizer for a little over $100. You can get a whole new phone for $200. And it will take you almost no time at all. I spent an entire day of straight work and ended up having the replace the phone anyway. Total cost was about $300 PLUS the time. SO: Unless you're a Kung-fu Master, just get the whole assembly.
I just attempted to replace the screen glass only, but I discovered that on the AT&T model XT1097, the glass is attached to the LCD, digitizer assembly and is almost impossible to remove. Looks like I will have to buy the whole assembly. YouTube videos showing the process don't mention that the assemblies differ.. Be sure to get the correct model number's part.
