How to restore iPhone 5 that is stuck after battery replacement?

I replaced my IPhone 5 battery. Tried to restore the software with itunes - but it does not respond after multiple attempts. Just shows the itunes icon on the screen. Hopefully haven't damaged something. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.
