The screen stays black on MacPro tower on startup

My MacPro tower does not light up the screen after startup. The chime goes off, but nothing happens! I have tried holding the P and R and COMMAND keys down on startup, but that made no difference! It has Yosemite10.10 installed, but if I can get it going I want to install SNOW LEOPARD on it as Yosemite seems to have too many bugs in it yet.

Anybody has any good advice for me?

Just happened to me - I tried this trick & worked! After I hard restarted b/c of wireless issues then it went black with chime sound. No keyboard backlight (when pressed caps lock nothing happens). I did option+commend+p+r+power: nothing. opened back, reconnected all the cables, restart:same black screen. I read this online threads - restart, shine flash light thru apple logo from back of the laptop, I was able to see the apple logo with the process bar moving. Let it go thru (takes time so leave it not holding the flash light all along). When you see login screen thru the flash light, type in login password. In a min or two you will see your screen back to normal. I've got password reset screen for filevault. never seen this before but I checked "forgot password reset" and entered login password and it went thru normal startup. If goes black, shine the flashlight thru apple logo from back of the laptop and you will see something is processing.

Boot to original or Snow Leopard install disks (or other volume).

This system can run the last version of OS X 10.7 "Lion" if upgraded to at least 2 GB of RAM. Although it has a 64-bit processor, it has a 32-bit EFI and cannot boot in 64-bit mode. It also does not support "OpenCL" running the default video card or the other build-to-order video cards that were offered via custom configuration.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it accepted.

Thanks for your comment machead3, but my trouble is that I can't boot it up to anything! Just no life on the screen. It does not have a DVD drive because the guy that I bought it from installed an extra big graphics card. And he told me that with the extra big graphics card that there is not enough room for a DVD drive too. Thanks anyway!

You can pull the drive and put it in an external case and do the install from another machine OR Target boot a Snow Leopard machine with an optical drive then select that boot volume from the MacPro using option boot. I'm not sure target booting and cloning the Snow Leopard machine would work (you could try it though).

Good to hear you got it fixed.

As for resetting the PRAM, one should press and hold Option-Command-P-R right after the startup chime.

Try to boot using option key on an priginal apple, keyboard. If,there,os a working graphics card you will see the choices, for any startup disk. I,for example, have a newer card in a 2008 Mac Pro which glitches on startup as those card,is only sort of supported, but using the option key allows,it to,work, fine once I choose the appropriate startup disk. It,should not be this way of course but this works.for me. It does sound as if your graphics card is not installed or os defective,or cables are inappropriate. There are two outputs so try the other alternative outputs.

I put the hard drive in another MacPro and Repaired the HD using Disk Utility, and that fixed the problem with the HD. But evidently my graphics card was on the blink too, because if I installed another graphics card-then it worked good! Thanks for the tips and suggestions!
