Will the LCD from iPad mini 1 work on iPad mini 2?

Hi guys,

you guys always do an awesome job, keep up the great work!

So I've been having issues with eye strain when I use retina displays. It seems the higher the pixel density is, the worse it gets.

To remedy this, I was thinking about switching out the retina display in my ipad mini 2 with the non retina and considerably lower pixel density lcd from an iPad mini 1 I have.

I would just use the ipad mini 1 but I want the processing power of the a7 that's in the ipad mini 2. So I would like to try this hack and make a franken ipad mini 2 with regular display to have the 'best of both' so to speak.

so my question is, would replacing the retina display in the ipad mini 2 with the regular display in the ipad mini 1 work? are the digitizers/connections the same? WDYT?

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

What the heck is this? No! You can't switch the iPad mini LCD screens!

They do have the same connector, but a mini 1st gen LCD will NOT work in a retina mini. And a mini retina LCD will not work in an original mini.

I see this all the time in my work as iPad mini backlight fixer for a gajillion people. If you break your LCD and order the wrong one---it won't work---and you'll think you have a backlight problem. Nope. Just order the correct LCD and you'll be good to go.

NOTE: It is easy to recognize the mini retina LCD --it has a small connector that comes up from the bottom of the LCD. The mini original LCD has a small connector that comes from the edge of the LCD.

Hi,

Yes, the size is the same and the only difference is the density. I'm not sure about the flex cable connector.

But from my opinion I know that the big companies make the products to be with an incompatible parts. This is a business. They make small but enough changes.

But there is another problem. The tablet must recognize the LCD with a different resolution in case to prepare the right video output information. This means the engineers from Apple must make the main board ready to recognize and accept different LCDs.

I would be very interesting if someone tried to do so. A smaller resolution will release more power for other processes.

Regards.

P.S. This question is very cool :)

Hello,

We have done it both ways. We only have a few flickering issues with some of the 1st gen with retina mod (usually a restore and update fixes that) but none with ipad 2nd retina or non retina lcds.

Funny story. We stumbled on this by mistake since we have 1 tray for ipad mini parts and someone removed them from the bubble wrap to fit more parts in 1 bin ( really bad idea). So we had 2 lcds we had no idea what gen they where for thus testing them on both gens at the same time.

So in theory it does work but I wouldn't advise it. You can also use the same digitizers but you do get some irradical touch behavior due to the chips being different. Unlike the digitizers from ipad 3rd and 4th gen that work without a problem if you use either.

That's cool! I'm so glad you have done this before. Just to clarify, we're talking about iPad mini right? not the regular iPad? Well.. I guess I could just try it out and find out..

In terms of the digitizer, to avoid the irradical touch behavior, would I have to swap the digitizer from the retina lcd with the non-retina LCD that I'm replacing it with?

thanks so much for your response!

THIS ANSWER IS WRONG!!!! A.) You can't switch iPad mini LCDs between retina and original. B.) There is only one iPad mini digitizer--there is no version difference for the digitizer.

さんによる

No you can not.. been there and tried it out.. yes they have the same connectiom but LCD is different .. the digitizers yes they do.. but not LCD

I Emphatically agree the LCD on the iPad mini and iPad mini2 cannot be interchanged! I had a stack of ipad mini and was disassembling and parts testing. I attempted to make a several verified good ipad mini LCD(s) work with (2) seperate ipad mini 2 and was unsuccessful on all (8) attempts.

I tried this myself and the LCD DID NOT FIT!!! I was using a 1st gen LCD and putting it into a 2nd gen. It does not fit in the space.
