Newly installed optical drive not recognized

Just followed the iFixit guide to install a new Superdrive in my iMac but it isn't recognized by the system or by Toast.

Possible problem: the cable retainer on the ZIF socket where you connect the optical drive cable came out when I pulled it a bit too far. I didn't think it was needed and I just plugged the ZIF cable into the socket and secured it solidly with kapton tape. I wiggled it a bit and it seemed to be inserted solidly.

Put everything back together and the drive isn't recognized. I inserted a CD and it got pulled in as normal and started spinning up, but didn't show on desktop.

Will I need to try to reinsert the cable retainer? Is that even possible? Alternatives?

Thanks for any help.

Don't know if you unlocked the ZIF connector (step 14) if you didn't you cant put the cable back in far enough to make contact (reverse of step 15).

Go over the connector again. remove your tape and unlock before futzing with your new connection. If the connector moves to the right (unlock) then holding the connector in that position reinsert and push/pull the ribbon in as far as it will go. I find using some blue painters masking tape to create a strap or handle on the ribbon cable (something to pull on) helps.

After the cable is in as far as it will go then rotate the connector left. Test your device.

If the connector is destroyed a computer/small electronics repair shop may be able to remove the damaged one and affix a replacement.
